Five Questions 2013 Postseason: Does Hal Gill Have a Chance of Making The Team?

Flyers Faithful is pleased to have Dave Isaac from the Courier-Post, Matt Brigidi from SB Nation, David Strehle from The Fourth Period, Anthony Mingioni from Center Ice Philly, and our very own Steve Jacot participate in the current iteration of Five Questions. This is the third of a five-part series focusing on the 2013-2014 preseason. (Please keep in mind that these questions were answered last week, so some of our questions may already have been resolved by the team.) Does Hal Gill stand a real chance of making the squad? Dave Isaac: No. They already have nine guys on one-way contracts and Marc-Andre Bourdon was waived to …

Five Questions 2013 Preseason: Which Phantoms Will Make the Flyers Out of Training Camp?

Flyers Faithful is pleased to have Dave Isaac from the Courier-Post, Matt Brigidi from SB Nation, David Strehle from The Fourth Period, Anthony Mingioni from Center Ice Philly, and our very own Steve Jacot participate in the current iteration of Five Questions. (Please keep in mind that these questions were answered last week, so some of our questions may already have been resolved by the team.) Dave Isaac: The Flyers won’t have many open roster spots because of all the contracts they’ve given out. It would take a lot to uproot a player that …

Poll: Who do you want to win the camp battles for third line wing and on the blueline?

Now that training camp has officially started, we can start to see some of the position battles with our own eyes. Perhaps the two biggest spots up for grabs are the third line wing position and then rounding out the sixth and seventh spots on the blueline. Who do you want to win the spot on the 3rd line? Newly signed Michael Raffl is an intriguing name but making the jump straight to the NHL is probably a lot to ask. Tye McGinn is a realistic in-house option based on his play last year. Former first round pick Scott Laughton …

Does Hal Gill have a chance to stick with the Flyers?

After being invited to training camp, does Hal Gill have a legitimate chance to stick with the Philadelphia Flyers? It adds another body to a defense corps that already had some intriguing decisions to make. From my article last week: The Flyers are currently just over $2 million over the league’s upper limit, so they will have to shed some cap space. The likely candidates are defenseman Braydon Coburn or Andrej Meszaros (or Grossmann to a lesser extent). The Flyers have nine blue-liners signed to one-way contract; and young players such as Oliver Lauridsen are knocking on the door of …

You might remember this guy from such roles as Flyers 2013 defenseman

The (positive) outlook on defense

It is unlikely that this offseason will feature more than two big moves on defense for the Flyers. There will be no Keith Yandle, Alex Pietrangelo or Shea Weber patrolling Philadelphia’s blue line. The Flyers have been interested in Yandle for a few years now and they finally managed to get him. Well, not him. They go Mark Streit and he’s kind of like Yandle. They both have the same cap hit and both put up nearly the same amount of points in the last two seasons (Streit had 74 points and Yandle had 73). Streit may be older but he …
