Flight Plan: Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

Through two games, the Philadelphia Flyers are looking like a good team, but have lacked finish as they’ve been outscored 7-2 thus far in the 2013-2014 season. Luckily, there are 80 more games left as opposed to last year where there would only be 46 games  remaining at this point, and there are some bright spots. The scoring lead for the team is currently a three-way tie between Vincent Lecavalier, Mark Streit, and Brayden Schenn. Schenn and Lecavalier clearly have some chemistry on the second power play unit and have each scored a goal and notched a helper on …

Metropolitan Division Preview: Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes and the Philadelphia Flyers have a somewhat shared history. Two all-time great Flyers, Rod Brind’Amour and Mark Recchi, won a Stanley Cup with the ‘Canes in 2006. Former Flyer Justin Williams was also on that roster. Their coach? Peter Laviolette. But that’s pretty much it. There’s not a noted record of animosity between these teams. They’ve played sometimes and…yup. That’s about it. So, I guess they’re rivals now or something. Boo ‘Canes?   City Facts They like racing, I believe. It’s close enough to the Wright Brothers that I will go ahead and declare the Hurricanes responsible …

Flight Plan: Seven Games Left

The Philadelphia Flyers have seven games remaining in their 2013 season. Yesterday they lost to the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 1-0. They are not technically mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but they will be this week with relative ease. Even if they win out, the Flyers would need all of the teams above them to lose just about every game. Four of the seven games on Philadelphia’s docket are this week against the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils, and the Carolina Hurricanes. Hockey Hilarity: Staal Scores! For Martin Brodeur?!

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Yesterday, the Carolina Hurricanes‘ Jordan Staal managed a dubious feat that has pushed the New Jersey Devils‘ Martin Brodeur into the NHL history books again. At 16:12 of the 1st period, with his team about to head to the power play, Staal collected the puck in the corner and threw it back towards the point hoping to set up shop in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, nobody was close enough to …

Atlantic Watch: Rangers on Winning Streak, Islanders on Point Streak, Devils Need Brodeur, Players Lost on Waivers

The Philadelphia Flyers started the week with a pair of wins, but ended the seven-day stretch on a sour note with a frustrating loss in New York last night. The Orange and Black need to grab some points this week, as two of their three contests over the next seven days are against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins. Philly started the week with a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday. Claude Giroux scored just 23 seconds in and Wayne Simmonds converted on a power-play chance a little over four minutes into …
