Rumors and Rumblings! Incoming Alex Pietrangelo offer sheet?

Did it come as a surprise to anyone that the first rumor regarding the Philadelphia Flyers involves upgrading a defense that has struggled the majority of the season?  The Flyers defense was plagued with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year, resulting in just their second missed playoff appearance in 18 seasons. According to Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, another offer sheet could be in the Flyers’ offseason plans.  This year’s target could be Alex Pietrangelo of the St. Louis Blues.  The 23-year-old defenseman is on the final year of his entry level contract and is due for a major raise. Panaccio states, …

CBA Explained: Compliance buy-outs

With this pathetic Flyers season dwindling down the topic of compliance buy-outs will be a hot one into and perhaps throughout the summer. The Flyers’ disappointing season combined with continued salary cap issues on a reduced salary cap next year will lead to a lot of conversation about if, or perhaps more accurately, who the Flyers should use the compliance buy-outs on. Currently, Danny Briere and Ilya Bryzgalov are the most popular targets. I had thought that most people were aware of the details of the compliance buy-outs because it is/was such a highly visible change in the Collective Bargaining Agreement …

Five Questions: Fixing the Flyers

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, Jim Butler, James Centifonti, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. If you were currently the General Manager of the Flyers, how would you go about fixing the defense without decimating the core of the team? John Saquella: I feel, rather strongly, that a lot of the team’s defensive issues are due …

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Looking forward: Who goes?

Prior to curating your opinions last week, I ran down a list of the players that the Flyers should keep heading into next season. This week, I will take a different approach, stating not what should happen but what may actually happen. Throughout yesterday’s trade deadline, the team remained relatively quiet, surfacing only to claim Adam Hall off of waivers to fill Max Talbot’s spot and to swap backup goalies. The front office openly acknowledges there are many holes to fill but the restraint shown today is an indicator that Paul Holmgren is not going to overpay for players just for the sake of …

Rumors Aplenty! Ryan Clowe, Jay Bouwmeester, Jaromir Jagr, and Jussi Jokinen

The Philadelphia Flyers have inched their way back into the playoff picture, and with that, the rumors have started.  With 13 games left to play and the trade deadline less than 48 hours away the Flyers’ interest in players around the league has seemed to grow.  Ryan Clowe, Jay Bouwmeester, Jaromir Jagr, and Jussi Jokinen have been linked to the Flyers in rumors today. CONFIRMED: #Flyers are having exploratory talks for Jagr, Clowe and Bouwmeester. — Sam Carchidi (@BroadStBull) April 1, 2013   Ryan Clowe The early major news today involved Ryan Clowe from the San Jose Sharks.  Clowe was …

A Song of Ice and Flyer

Game of Thrones returns to your television boxes and illegal pirated internet feeds tonight! To commemorate this, our own Sir Bomb of Este has matched up a bunch of Game of Thrones characters with the Flyers and other NHL stars. Big thanks to all the people on Twitter who helped with the initial ideas for this back in January. Please note that Steve has not read the books and is basing this off of the first two seasons of the TV show.   Ned Stark – Chris Pronger He lost his head Cheap jokes aside, Pronger was the leader of …

Rumor mill: Dan Boyle and, yet again, Bobby Ryan

The most glaring hole on this Philadelphia Flyers roster is the lack of a true number one defenseman.  According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal and Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, Dan Boyle is on the trade block and the Philadelphia Flyers are interested. “If, however, the San Jose Sharks are willing to trade the 36-year-old Boyle, who has a year left on his six-year, $40 million contract with a whopping $6.6 million cap hit, the Flyers have interest” Panaccio wrote. And Matheson stated, “He’d be excellent in Philadelphia, where the Flyers are crying for offence, but again, his age …

Breaking down the Bullies: buy or sell?

The gauntlet of opponents the Flyers have faced over the last 10 days was supposed to provide some answers about what type of team they really were. Instead, a series of sporadic efforts has left both the organization and its followers with many of the same questions they faced a week ago. Some speak of playoffs, while others speak of prospects. With the trade deadline looming and the end of the season shortly thereafter, is there any way to truly categorize this team as a buyer, seller, or even something in between? After the nightmare on Broadway, the Flyers played …
