The Philadelphia Flyers have now won five games in a row and are sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points and 101 goals scored, being the first team in the NHL to reach 100 goals this season. Peter Laviolette’s club has overcome a lot of criticism and adversity through these first 28 games to get to this point, but they may have to push forward without two more of their best players in Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov. Giroux is currently leading the NHL in scoring with 39 points, three points ahead of resurgent Toronto Maple Leafs winger …
Holmgren talks Pronger, Schenn
Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: What changed with Chris? “I think over the last few days he’s had some difficulties… a fairly persistent headache, just sluggish feeling – so we’re just trying to do the right thing here and get him checked out by the doctors in Pittsburgh and just see what we’re dealing with. Is it a concussion? I don’t know that we know that. We want to get a better idea, obviously.” Q: There’s still no idea what it might have stemmed from? The high stick? “I don’t know. I looked yesterday and I think he played …
Pronger out indefinitely
Breaking news out of Flyers camp this afternoon… General manager Paul Holmgren said that defenseman Chris Pronger will be out of commission indefinitely. “While Chris’ knee is improving, he has struggled with other issues that are concussion-like symptoms,” Holmgren revealed in a statement Friday morning. “Chris will see Dr. Joe Maroon and Dr. Mickey Collins on Wednesday, December 14th in Pittsburgh for further evaluation. Chris will be out indefinitely.” The news didn’t get any better for youngster Brayden Schenn. “Brayden reported ‘not feeling himself’ on December 5th,” Holmgren added. “Our doctors believe he has a mild concussion. Brayden will be …
Hartnell Gets Game-Winner, Flyers Edge Pens, 3-2
The Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the last ten minutes of the game, but Jaromir Jagr and Max Talbot got the last laugh against their former team as the Flyers produced enough offense in the first two periods to earn a 3-2 win in Philly tonight. Scott Hartnell tapped home his 13th goal of the season in the crease halfway through the game for his third game-winner of the season. Wayne Simmonds led the way with a goal and an assist, while Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves in his fourth straight win. The victory, coupled with Florida’s 2-0 win at Boston, propelled the Flyers into the top spot in both the Atlantic Division and …
RICE & MICE: Loose bodies in the knee
Chris Pronger had some “loose bodies” removed from his right knee on July 27, 2010, and he missed the first two games of the season and didn’t return to the lineup until October 11. Pronger had surgery on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 to clear out more “loose bodies” from his left knee and is projected to be out of the lineup for 4 weeks. The left knee was supposedly in better shape than the right knee; however it remains to be seen if the recovery time for the left knee will be less than half of what was needed for …
3 on 3 for the week of 12.04.2011
Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3, where we look back at the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Orange and Black had a mini road trip to the West Coast, winning both games and gathering 4 more points, keeping them in the hunt in the Eastern Conference for a top playoff seed. A few key players made their return to the lineup, but would they return “hot” or “not”? Let’s get to this week’s 3 “hot” Flyers: The Giroux-Jagr-Harnell line — I could have just made them one through three, but I thought they deserved to be together at …
Flight Plan 12.04.2011
The Philadelphia Flyers won both ends of a back-to-back situation for the second time this season, beating both the Anaheim Ducks and the Phoenix Coyotes, and now sit just three points away from tying the Pittsburgh Penguins, whom they will face later this week, for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. With all the injuries the Flyers have taken recently, especially to their blue line, it’s great to see them able to soldier on and pick up valuable points on the road. Claude Giroux scored a goal last night, adding his 15th goal and 32nd point on the year, …
Giroux Nets Winner In Overtime As Flyers Complete Huge Comeback
Trailing 3-0 midway through the second period, the Flyers stormed back to beat the Ducks 4-3 in overtime out in Anaheim tonight. Claude Giroux scored the game-winner and had an assist in the second period, while Jaromir Jagr had two goals and an assist in his return to the lineup after missing more than a week. Kimmo Timonen assisted on three scores and Danny Briere added two helpers as the Flyers enjoyed their first road win against a Western Conference team on the season. Andrew Cogliano and Teemu Selanne picked up early goals for the Ducks. Jonas Hiller held down …
Pronger talks post surgery
Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: When did you have your surgery and how are you feeling? A: I had the surgery on Tuesday afternoon. I’m feeling okay just ice and elevation, trying to get the swelling out and I start my rehab tomorrow Q: Holmgren said the other day that you would be out for 4 weeks. Are you optimistic that it will be four weeks? Do you think you could be back sooner than that? A: I have no idea. Again, I had surgery two days ago, so once I start getting my rehab going, as I progress …
Are the Rangers posturing?
Picture it: Anaheim, December of 2011. The Philadelphia Flyers are in town, preparing to face the Ducks on Friday night. The talented Ducks team quickly sunk like a stone to the bottom of the NHL standings, managing only 7 wins in 24 games so far this season. The situation is dire. Head coach Randy Carlyle was let go and replaced by former Washington Capitals head coach, Bruce Boudreau, last night. Over a quarter of the way into the season, the prospects of making the playoffs already seem grim for Anaheim and more moves seem imminent. Atop the list of potential …
