Flight Plan: Week of 01.28.2013

The Philadelphia Flyers had an even-up week as they won two games against the New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers, and lost two games against the New Jersey Devils and the Tampa Bay Lightning. As it sits, the Flyers are owners of a 2-4-0 record with four points, which is good enough for last in the Atlantic Division. To boot, any good vibes that may have been building for the club in two near complete game wins over the Rangers and Panthers, were quickly washed away as Philadelphia was easily handled by Tampa Bay in a 5-1 loss where …

Flyers wallop Panthers, earn second consecutive win

Coming off of their first win of the season the Flyers were eager to take that number to two against a Florida Panthers team that were the mirror image of the Flyers through four games. While the Flyers lost their first three contests before getting a win, the Panthers had lost three in a row since winning their season opener. After a great effort with a shorthanded lineup against the Rangers on Thursday the Flyers welcomed a couple players back to lineup, amongst a myriad of other changes. Brayden Schenn returned from his one game suspension. Danny Briere made his …

Atlantic Watch: 1/19-1/22

This wasn’t the way the Philadelphia Flyers wanted to start the season, but there is still plenty of time to turn it around. After they opened the 2013 campaign with a loss at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Orange and Black lost a pair of road games in Buffalo and New Jersey to start the year on a three-game losing streak. Philly doesn’t just sit at the bottom of the division, they sit at the bottom of the league, as there are there are seven teams yet to record a point, but the Flyers are the only team to …

Pens Ruin Flyers’ Opener, Beat Philly 3-1

The Philadelphia Flyers had a strong final 40 minutes, but unfortunately the first 20 cost them, as they lost their first game of the 2013 season 3-1 to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. James Neal had what turned out to be the game-winner just 7:20 into the contest, while Marc-Andre Fleury kept 27 of the 28 shots the Flyers threw at him out of the net. Claude Giroux had the lone goal for the hosts, as Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 24 of the Penguins’ 26 shots in a game they didn’t necessarily lose, but just ran out of time. “After the first 13, …

Taking Stock: Defense & Goaltending

Over the past few seasons, the hallmark of the Philadelphia Flyers has been their offense. Notorious for their ability to accumulate and develop high-end offensive talent via the draft, the team has been able to consistently find success based on its robust offensive presence. Yet for all the attention the offense (rightfully) receives, the defense was never truly all that far behind, anchored most recently by the big body of Chris Pronger and the puck-moving prowess of Matt Carle. Now those two stalwarts are gone, paving the way for a new class of defenders to take the reigns on the …

Briere wrist update and other Flyers news

Flyers winger Danny Briere “had” a “hairline fracture” in his wrist that was injured while he played in Germany, but team GM Paul Holmgren says it is healing, while the man himself says it is “healing nicely.” That’s the juiciest piece of information to come out of Day 2 of an abbreviated training camp. Nonetheless, it is expected the 35-year-old Quebecer will miss opening weekend against the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. It’s tough news for the scrappy forward, who seemed to enjoy more success playing overseas in the first half of this season than he did last year in Philly …

Now Boarding: Finally the National Hockey League’s brand of professional ice hockey will be back where it belongs: on the ice, in the arenas, in front of the fans in those buildings and at home. The Philadelphia Flyers opened training camp officially yesterday and will have a free open session at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday at 6 p.m. This week there will be back-to-back games for the Orange and Black, and they will surely be high energy and intensity games. The regular season opener will surely be a classic as the Flyers host the Pittsburgh Penguins at …
