Point/Counterpoint: NHLers Playing Overseas

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Kim P and Craig F discuss the pros and cons of NHL players joining teams in other leagues during the lockout. Point: Kim P. Now that the NHL is in lockout mode, some players have flocked overseas and joined teams in European hockey leagues. It’s great for those players, who get the chance to do what they love even though their own league is at a standstill, but there are some downsides to these guys playing abroad. When a …

CBA Chatter

Everything you wanted to know about the CBA but were afraid to ask Here are your updates from the past week on the ongoing collective bargaining agreement talks from around the Web. Lockout. It’s a dirty word to me, like “strike”, “New York Rangers”, and “country music”. We,the fans, always lose during any labor disagreement between the owners and the players. We can only hope that both sides suck it up, meet in the middle and get a deal done. As of this writing, there are no plans on the two sides meeting, but hopefully this weekend someone will reach out and …

Crashing the Crease: Home Cooking

The 2012-2013 NHL season had all the earmarks of a solid season for the league as a whole. Last season ended in fantastic fashion for the growth of the game. The LA Kings had sparked some real interest in the game out West, even bringing to light the fact that David Beckham has been a Kings fan before it was cool [again]. People who weren’t Canadian transplants were paying attention to the sport. The East Coast equivalent of L.A. was ready to see a return to the limelight, as the New York Rangers had effectively re-tooled and upgraded their roster. …

The one where I get angry, irrational, and devious

This time tomorrow, the NHL lockout will be underway and there’s nothing we can do about it as fans. We can swear up and down that we’ll turn away and protest games but it does not matter what we say. Most of us will keep coming back and, now that the NHL has a longterm deal with NBC, the sport will reach a larger audience once it does return. Just think about all that pent up anxiousness and desire all coming to a head with the tease of two of the NHL’s most storied franchises, the Detroit Red Wings …

Crashing the Crease: “Clutchness,” Revisited

About a month ago, we looked at a breakdown of Bryz’s save percentage in two minute buckets. The intent was to measure how “clutch” Bryz was by evaluating his save percentage at key points in the game through the first 41 Flyers’ games. What we saw was, at least at a high level, a stark difference between his performance in wins and losses. Looking back on the previous season, though, there was an improvement in Bryz’s game once he was handed the reins after the Winter Classic. Thus, there was a necessity to complete the analysis and see what the …

Lockedupations

You know those polls at sporting events that they put up on the jumbotron where they ask the athletes what they’d do if they weren’t an athlete? We all laugh with glee at the thought of alternate universe Bernie Parent hosting a variety show or Dan Carcillo as a high school janitor. With a lockout looming on the horizon, Kim and Steve have speculated what the current Flyers will end up doing with no hockey to play. Scott Hartnell & Kimmo Timonen: Fighting crime as The Orange Hartnell and Kimmo When Scott Hartnell decides to take the law into his …

Lockout Lamentations

One of the things that I love most about living in Philadelphia is the instant bond you form with someone when you discover you’re both fans of a particular team, or player. I love that no matter where you go, you can strike up a conversation about local sports with a stranger and feel like you’re talking to an old friend. I always smile when I catch someone wearing a Flyers shirt, especially in the middle of the summer, when hockey is only on the minds of few. The idea of losing Flyers hockey for a season is a pretty …

Crashing the Crease: Trap Games

Hockey pundits will often discuss a phenomenon known as the “trap game.” In this case, “trap” isn’t referring to some boring neutral zone forecheck, but rather the entire game being a sort of trap. Generally, it refers to a matchup in which a team faces a weaker opponent in the midst of high-energy games. Contests like these are generally considered risky because in the midst of a series of emotional, high-energy or crucial division games, a team may underestimate a weak opponent, or simply not be as prepared for the matchup, and lose a game that probably should not have. …
