Around the Net 3.20.12

Welcome to Around the Net, a look at the Philadelphia Flyers on and off the ice. This week we look at Andrej Meszaros and his back, Claude Giroux and whether he misses playing with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, Ilya Bryzgalov earning another NHL player of the week honor and more. Meszaros to have surgery, miss 6-8 weeks This could be a damaging blow to the Flyers defense, but with the additions of Kubina and Grossman and Brandon Manning’s solid play thus far, the Flyers should be able to live with Mez for a short while. Buffalo Sabres v Boston Bruins

Bruins regain form, top Flyers in shootout

It’s fitting that two teams near the top of the Eastern Conference standings who have struggled mightily in afternoon starts couldn’t resolve their differences in 65 minutes of actual play. So it was the Boston Bruins who emerged victorious on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden by a 3-2 count, though not due to the luck of the Irish. Rather, it had to do with Ilya Bryzgalov returning to his catatonic act in the shootout, failing to stop any of the three Bruins shooters. Tim Thomas only came up one save better, denying Danny Briere at the right post to end …

Boruk, Bryzgalov unlikely partners in Flyers folk tale

Within the boundaries of any given season, there are certain moments which show up on the radar, forcing us to take notice that what we’re witnessing is truly special. Most often, it’s a signature win against a rival at a key time. If we’re lucky, it’s a gaffe committed by the other side which allows our team to eke out a victory. As happens too often, it can arrive in the form of a significant injury which either galvanizes or demoralizes team spirit. Some teams celebrate that moment with rodents, some with seafood, some with trips to Dairy Queen. Ilya …

The Streak

I was excited when I heard that Ilya Bryzgalov was going to be a Flyer. There was an immediate desire not to be pleased with the trading of Mike Richards to the Kings (supposedly to get the money) nor when I found out about the HUMANGOUS (had to) contract that the Flyers offered Bryzgalov to come. However, I liked the Phoenix goalie because I’d been following the Coyotes off and on since I started watching hockey. He got them into the playoffs in 2010 as far as I was concerned. And then the first half (3/4th’s?) of the season happened. …

A Record-Setting Night as the Flyers Best the Islanders 3-2

It was a night of accomplishments for the Flyers in a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night, none bigger than Ilya Bryzgalov setting a new franchise record for longest scoreless streak at 249:43. With less than 10 minutes to go in the third period, it looked like Bryzgalov was on the way to his fourth straight shutout, but the Islanders finally managed to figure him out. Michael Grabner tipped the puck past him with 6:30 left, and only 35 seconds later, the Islanders scored again – this time on a snap shot in the slot by …

Dr. No: Bryzgalov keeps shutout streak alive by blanking Devils

Maybe Ilya Bryzgalov was prescient back in January, pointing the way out of the woods and forward into the thick of a playoff race whose pulse he seemingly controls. On Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center, the $51 million man joined some elite goaltending company by stopping all 17 shots he faced as the  Philadelphia Flyers silenced the  New Jersey Devils, 3-0. It was one of the easiest games he’s had as a professional and he took it all in stride, as if it was an eventuality. Bryzgalov notched his sixth whitewash of the season and his third in as …

Devils cramp Flyers’ style, five-game win streak over

The New Jersey Devils injected a dose of reality into the plans of the Philadelphia Flyers, using a three-goal third period to claim a 4-1 decision in the opener of a home-and-home series Sunday night from Prudential Center. Ilya Kovalchuk did his usual damage, tallying a goal and two assists. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias picked up a goal and helper apiece, while Martin Brodeur worked his magic by stopping 18-of-19 shots. It was the 650th career victory for the 39-year-old Montreal native. “We want to get into the playoffs and do well once we’re there,” Kovalchuk said of his …
