Flyers hang on for 3-2 win, end three-game losing streak

Both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres entered tonight’s game at the Wells Fargo Center on three-game losing streaks, but the hosts were able to grab a 3-2 victory to end their skid. Claude Giroux had the game-winning goal just 17 seconds into the second period and Kimmo Timonen had two helpers in the win, while Ilya Bryzgalov had 17 stops for the decision. This was a good week to see how the Philadelphia Flyers stack up against some of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. The results however, were not good. The Flyers, now losers of three straight, will look to find any kind of way to get back on track and win some games going forward of they will be golfing in May instead of playing Stanley Cup Playoff hockey. Later today the Flyers will host the Buffalo Sabres, then have a home and home against the New Jersey Devils. The Philadelphia Flyers played as well, if not better, than Boston for most of today’s game, but let things get away from them during a brief span in the first period to let the Bruins grab a 3-0 win. Tuukka Rask stopped all 23 shots from the Flyers for his second shutout of the year, as the trio of Tyler Seguin, Chris Kelly, and Daniel Paille beat Ilya Bryzgalov in a span of 2:18. The Philadelphia Flyers had the Pittsburgh Penguins right where they wanted them after the first period, but the visitors responded with four unanswered goals to pull off the 5-4 win tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. Chris Kunitz had the game-winner on a night where he had two goals and an assist, while Sidney Crosby posted a three-assist performance. Tomas Vokoun earned the win after he relieved Marc-Andre Fleury, as he denied all 14 of the shots he faced. Tuesday night’s game at Madison Square Garden was quite possibly the single most glaring example of one of Bryzgalov’s greatest shortcomings: he is not particularly good at the poke check. Playing the poke check correctly is the epitome of a very fine line for any goaltender. Ryan Callahan and Rick Nash each registered two goals tonight, as the New York Rangers handed the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-2 loss at Madison Square Garden. Henrik Lundqvist recorded the win with 23 stops, while Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek were the only two visitors to beat New York’s goaltender this evening. The loss snaps Philly’s two-game winning streak. The Flyers came out and dominated the first segment of the third period, but couldn’t beat Lundqvist to gain the lead.
