As we sit here in the midst of two days without Flyers hockey, let us take pause to reminisce about the old NHL: The forgotten, hazy days of yesteryear, in which teams had more than 21 hours between games, players skated on sharpened butter knives and, in one small corner of the league, an eccentric Russian goalie named Ilya Bryzgalov hitchhiked from Phoenix to Philadelphia and found a new providence, playing hockey for our boys in orange and black. The Philadelphia Flyers were able to extend their point streak to four games this week, as they earned a shootout loss to the Florida Panthers and an overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Although they were dominated in Toronto, the Orange and Black did a good job of rebounding to earn their second road win of the year last night in Winnipeg. The Flyers continue their road trip with three of their six games away from the Wells Fargo Center coming in the next seven days. Second Period Hurts Flyers, Lose 5-2 in Toronto

The Philadelphia Flyers’ troubles away from the Wells Fargo Center continued tonight, as they were pummeled by the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at the Air Canada Centre. Matt Frattin had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Cody Franson and Nazem Kadri each had two assists in front of their home crowd. Colton Orr had the game-winning goal and James van Riemsdyk scored against his former team, as James Reimer earned the victory despite leaving the game early in the second period due to an injury. Flyers send Hurricanes home with another Saturday loss

Danny Briere scored his second goal of the season at 1:47 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers sent Carolina Hurricanes home with a loss for the second straight Saturday, winning 4-3. Briere took an outlet pass from Nicklas Grossmann along the boards, crossed up the defense, and sent a wrist shot, which deflected off the far post and then off the backside of ‘Canes goalie Cam Ward and over the goal line. Crashing the Crease: Bryzgalov’s Depth

After the first week of the season, Ilya Bryzgalov’s first report card had him pegged as playing well despite not getting results. His play since then has only continued to impress – if not improve altogether – and in lieu of the Flyers matching a season-high two game win streak with Bryzgalov’s back-to-back victories against Carolina and Tampa Bay, the results are starting to come.
