The Philadelphia Flyers finally made it official on Thursday afternoon, revealing that winger and restricted free agent Jakub Voracek was signed to a multi-year contract extension. This morning, the Czech website, iSport, reported that the pact was worth $17 million over four years, meaning an annual cap hit of $4.25 million. The 22-year-old from Kladno recorded a career high 18 goals to go with 31 assists in 78 games during his first season with the Orange and Black. The Philadelphia Flyers tried to add one of the best defensemen in the NHL to the roster by signing restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14 year, $110 million offer sheet. Their hopes were dashed on Tuesday when the Nashville Predators announced their decision to match the Flyers’ offer. The Predators had until 11:30 pm Wednesday to match the Flyers’ offer. It was a sad day in the Greenblatt household when the Flyers traded James van Riemsdyk. For one, JvR was my guy. Also, my brother had just purchased a JvR Winter Classic jersey (for the record, he has a penchant of purchasing jerseys and finding said player traded or released within two years of the purchase). But it was more than just the loss of that once-promising Jersey native that made my household sad; it was knowing the uber-talented van Riemsdyk will become a top-six forward for another team. In a pivotal Game 4, the Philadelphia Flyers showed signs of frustration and were out shot 43-22 in a 4-2 loss to the Devils at the Prudential Center tonight. Dainius Zubrus registered a two-goal night, while Petr Sykora and Marek Zidlicky both had a goal and an assist in New Jersey’s third straight win in the series. In front of the faithful at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a 5-1 win, sending Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins packing. After Philly’s loss in Game 5 on Friday, Scott Hartnell said it was time for the Flyers’ defense and goaltending to get the Orange and Black a win. Although much of the media assumed the series was over, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out and reminded everyone they’re still alive with an impressive 10-3 victory over the Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center tonight.
