Although they came out with more energy and effort, the Philadelphia Flyers fell to the Devils for a fourth straight game with a 3-1 defeat at the Wells Fargo Center tonight in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, ending one of the most interesting playoffs in recent memory. New Jersey now awaits the winner of the Rangers/Caps series and will begin the Eastern Conference Finals some time next week. After a pair of failed power-play attempts in overtime, the Flyers let Alexei Ponikarovsky’s first goal of the 2012 playoffs be the game-winner in the Devils’ 4-3 victory tonight at the Prudential Center. The win gives Jersey a 2-1 series lead. Ilya Kovalchuk jumped on the Flyers’ clear in the neutral zone and caught Philly’s skaters in a line change when he hit Ponikarovsky with a pass at the Orange and Black’s blue line. In Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals series, the Philadelphia Flyers mysteriously showed little to no desire to win tonight’s affair, and the New Jersey Devils muscled their way to a 4-1 road victory. David Clarkson scored his first of the 2012 playoffs with 8:43 left in regulation to give the Devils a 2-1 edge. New Jersey’s #23 found Zach Parise alone in the slot, but couldn’t beat Ilya Bryzgalov due to a poke check from the Flyers’ goaltender. After having a goal earlier in the overtime period waved off, Danny Briere potted the winner 4:36 into the extra frame for a 4-3 win and a 1-0 series advantage for the Flyers in their Eastern Conference Semifinals’ matchup with the New Jersey Devils. “Is it pressure? In the first game of the series that produced less than seven goals total, the Pens held on for a 3-2 victory in Pittsburgh tonight. After they fell into a 3-0 hole in the series, the Pens have rattled off two straight wins to force Game 6 after their first win in a game of importance against the Flyers at the CONSOL Energy Center since it opened. A step in the right direction on the road to recovery. This could be huge for the Flyers. James van Riemsdyk is nearing a return from the fractured bone in his foot. Likely, he will have missed a total of 19 regular season games, along with the first 4 games of the 1st round of the playoffs. Van Riemsdyk originally fractured the foot while blocking a shot on March 1and had surgery to fix the fractured area with a plate on March 6th. At that time, it was estimated that he would miss 4-to-6 weeks. After seeing the doctor early …

RICE & MICE: Flyers current injury status

The first three injuries are those that are not expected to come back this season. Blair Betts has missed the entire season with a knee injury. From the sounds of things, he will likely not return to the Flyers or the NHL. Ian Laperriere has also missed the entire season and will not likely return to playing. Chris Pronger is out for the season with post concussion syndrome. After hearing that Pronger was struggling so much with the post concussion syndrome, his presence at the Flyers playoff clinching game is a good sign that he’s possibly feeling better. Then again, …

For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents.
