Blocked shots, hits, and fourth liners: Part 2

Two weeks ago I took a look at blocked shots and hits as it may relate to team success. Fans, media, and broadcasters alike frequently cite either statistic as an indication of a player performing well. I wanted to see if those statistics, at the team level, had any correlation with team success. The short answer is that I saw no obvious correlation. Philly has won two of their last three, but the last two games haven’t been pretty for the Orange and Black, as they’ve failed to create many scoring chances. Hopefully for the Flyers and their faithful a mix of desperation and injuries can lead to two points. The team responded well on …

Harding blanks Flyers in Minnesota, Wild win 2-0

After playing an ugly road game on Saturday and winning, the Philadelphia Flyers played another ugly road game tonight. Unfortunately, they didn’t walk away with the win, as the Minnesota Wild produced a 2-0 victory on home ice. Josh Harding stopped 21 shots for the shutout, while both Jason Pominville and Charlie Coyle beat Ray Emery, who had 19 saves in the loss. Just under four minutes into the final period, Mikko Koivu carried the puck along the side boards to Emery’s left and around the net before he hit Pominville in front with a beautiful pass. The former …
