Atlantic Watch: 1/19-1/22

This wasn’t the way the Philadelphia Flyers wanted to start the season, but there is still plenty of time to turn it around. After they opened the 2013 campaign with a loss at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Orange and Black lost a pair of road games in Buffalo and New Jersey to start the year on a three-game losing streak. Philly doesn’t just sit at the bottom of the division, they sit at the bottom of the league, as there are there are seven teams yet to record a point, but the Flyers are the only team to …

Pens Ruin Flyers’ Opener, Beat Philly 3-1

The Philadelphia Flyers had a strong final 40 minutes, but unfortunately the first 20 cost them, as they lost their first game of the 2013 season 3-1 to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. James Neal had what turned out to be the game-winner just 7:20 into the contest, while Marc-Andre Fleury kept 27 of the 28 shots the Flyers threw at him out of the net. The general consensus seems to be that they need to draft a defenseman in the first round and anything else is disappointing. There has also been lots of talk on whether or not the Flyers should move up to draft one of the higher ranked defenders. Most specifically, Ryan Murray, who will likely be selected second. I’ve seen someone go as far as suggesting a trade of James van Riemsdyk, Andrej Meszaros, Sergei Bobrovsky, and a first-round …

Fleury Comes Up Big In Third Period, Flyers Lose 3-2

In the first game of the series that produced less than seven goals total, the Pens held on for a 3-2 victory in Pittsburgh tonight. After they fell into a 3-0 hole in the series, the Pens have rattled off two straight wins to force Game 6 after their first win in a game of importance against the Flyers at the CONSOL Energy Center since it opened. Marc-Andre Fleury didn’t let the Flyers even the score in the third period despite the fact Philly out shot Pittsburgh 14-8 in the final frame. With several crucial saves throughout the contest, Fleury has seemed to …
