A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. The New Jersey Devils injected a dose of reality into the plans of the Philadelphia Flyers, using a three-goal third period to claim a 4-1 decision in the opener of a home-and-home series Sunday night from Prudential Center. Ilya Kovalchuk did his usual damage, tallying a goal and two assists. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias picked up a goal and helper apiece, while Martin Brodeur worked his magic by stopping 18-of-19 shots. For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents. The end of their four-game road trip wasn’t pretty for the Flyers, as their only two points came in a shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With a pair of shutout losses, the Flyers have now been shut out five times this season. The Flyers hope two games against Eastern Conference teams below them in the standings will help them gain ground in a fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Flyers won two of their three games this week, as the club is still trying to turn things around before the playoffs. Although they are 4-5-2 since the All-Star break, Philly won two of their last three games. Fortunately for the Flyers, their next three games are away from the Wells Fargo Center, a scenario they are 19-9-2 in this season. In their first contest, the Flyers pounded the visiting Buffalo Sabres by a score of 7-2. The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. The Flyers went 2-1-1 in a week that featured a lot of ups and downs for the guys in Orange and Black. Hartnell Powers Flyers To 4-1 Win In New Jersey; Briere concussed

Scott Hartnell recorded a pair of power-play goals, and his second was the game-winning goal for Philly in their bittersweet 4-1 decision over the Devils in New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. Wayne Simmonds posted his first three-point game in the NHL and Claude Giroux had a pair of assists, while Ilya Bryzgalov came up with his second strong performance, stopping 30-of-31 shots.
