2012 NHL Entry Draft - Round One

Some thoughts on round one

First off, kudos to everyone who covered the draft live last night. People may joke every time a tweet pops up about a GM working the phones but those reporters worked their butts off last night. Today will be even more hectic. Well done folks. The Penguins got a lot better on paper last night and that worries many people in the Atlantic Division. The Penguins also got a lot better on paper in 2010 when they reshaped their defense by acquiring Zbynek Michalek and Paul Martin. How did that work out? Michalek was traded back to the Phoenix Coyotes …

Then and Now: Eric Weinrich

Many players will be remembered for their leadership, whether or not they could perform in the clutch, or if there were unique aspects to their game. For Eric Weinrich, he’ll most likely be remembered for a piece of equipment. The former Flyers’ defenseman that sported a yellow visor throughout his career went on to play for five different teams after his stay in Philly and is currently a scout for another NHL club. CBA 101 Part 1: Waivers and Re-Entry Waivers

I know some people care about the rules and regulations within the CBA more than others. One thing is for sure though, these rules and regulations directly impact the team that can be put on the ice. A Look At The Last 15 Years Of Flyers Playoff Goaltending

In judging Ilya Bryzgalov’s, um… interesting (?) job in net so far through this playoff run, I ran across the assessment of “I’d rank him Leighton” (h/t to our own Jim Hasson). Where would Leighton’s run rank in recent Flyers playoff history?  Their history in this area certainly hasn’t been pretty since the Flyers made a run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997. Below is my ranking of the Flyers’ playoff goalies in the past 15 years based on scientific research, public polling, and the influence of numerous beer-fueled conversations. 1.       Brian Boucher His entire rookie course in 2000 …

Minor League Update: 4/9-4/16

The Adirondack Phantoms finished 10th in the Eastern Conference for the 2011-2012 regular season, as the club missed a playoff berth by five points. As they headed into the final week of the campaign with an outside chance to make the postseason, the Phantoms dropped two of their final three tilts to miss an opportunity to win the Calder Cup. On Friday night, the Phantoms traveled to the MassMutual Center and lost 4-2 to the Springfield Falcons (Columbus Blue Jackets). Wade MacLeod potted two goals in the midst of the Falcons’ three-goal third period including the game-winner at the 12:33 …
