Flyers wallop Panthers, earn second consecutive win

Coming off of their first win of the season the Flyers were eager to take that number to two against a Florida Panthers team that were the mirror image of the Flyers through four games. While the Flyers lost their first three contests before getting a win, the Panthers had lost three in a row since winning their season opener. After a great effort with a shorthanded lineup against the Rangers on Thursday the Flyers welcomed a couple players back to lineup, amongst a myriad of other changes. Knuble redux; Lilja back from AHL

What started out as “whispers” became a source-confirmed bit of news during the first period of last night’s Flyers-Rangers game, which in turn became official on Friday afternoon. Mike Knuble will make his return to Philadelphia after an absence of three-plus seasons after passing a physical. It is a one-year deal reported to be worth $750,000. “Obviously we’re familiar with Mike,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said on Thursday night. “He’s a good guy, big, heavy player and we think he’s a good guy to throw in the mix right now…with the injuries we have.” Knuble had been plying his trade …

Ilya Bryzgalov had his strongest performance of the season tonight, as he stopped 34 saves to help the Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 1-0 at the Verizon Center. Eric Wellwood’s second goal of the season was all Bryzgalov needed for his third shutout of 2011-2012, as the Flyers won back-to-back games for the first time since the middle of January. The game-winning goal, which came at the 7:51 mark of the second period, was a redirection from Wellwood in the slot off of a pass from Pavel Kubina at the point. We have 25 days until free agency and I’m sure each and every one of those days will be rumor laden until July 1 arrives. Paul Holmgren was fairly active last season, adding Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell, Jody Shelley and Nikolay Zherdev, while retaining Darroll Powe and Daniel Carcillo. However all of that activity caused casualties of the cap. Arron Asham signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent and Simon Gagne, the longest- tenured Flyer at the time, waived his no-trade clause in a much maligned deal with Tampa Bay, while we took on Matt Walker — or more precisely, his two hip surgeries. …

Despite playing two pathetic games, the Flyers still found a way to come out with a win at the end of the week. After blowing a two-goal lead in the third period, Andrej Meszaros was able to save the Flyers from embarrassment by scoring in overtime on Thursday finalizing the score at 4-3. Thanks to several hectic events on Saturday (Chris Pronger and Oskars Bartulis injured, Erik Gustafsson making his NHL debut, and James van Riemsdyk briefly being sent down to the Phantoms), the Flyers were beat by a team that shouldn’t even be in the same league as them. It would have been sweet to see the Orange and Black do it this past Saturday against the rival New Jersey Devils, but Johan Hedberg and Patrik Elias had a little something to say in that regard.
