Does the Raffl signing have any implications for Read, Schenn, or Couturier?

It seems a bit silly to think that the signing of a 24 year old who was “only” playing in the second-best league in Sweden might affect what the Flyers choose to do with some of their other young players; namely Matt Read, Brayden Schenn, and Sean Couturier. However, I can’t help but wonder if this means the Flyers would consider trading one of their young forwards. I know I’m not alone, as Charlie O’Connor of The Hockey Guys recently expressed a similar thought. First and foremost, I’d like to state that this is purely my opinion and there is …

The Wedge, or how to continually fail in the business and still succeed

It’s a simple question that we all wrestle with from time to time. How do you know when you’ve “made it?” I’ve been credentialed with the Flyers on a steady basis with several outlets since 2005. I’ve worked in all levels of the game, from calling high school hockey in the Lower Bucks league for a radio station owned by Merrill Reese on up to throwing elbows with the best and the worst in the biz in a crowded, sweaty host locker room during a playoff series involving the Pittsburgh Penguins. My work has been published online in the United …

2013 Year in Review: Wayne Simmonds

While the Philadelphia Flyers may have suffered through a down year as a team, there are several individual players on the roster that should look back on this season and hold their heads high. One of those players is Wayne Simmonds, who is quickly becoming one of the more reliable scoring threats in Philadelphia. Heading into the season, expectations were high for ‘Simmer’ after a successful transition from the Pacific to Atlantic division last year. Before he could embark on his second season in Philadelphia under the final year of his contract, Simmonds was signed to a six-year extension that …

Then and Now: Denis Gauthier

The 2013 Eastern Conference Finals will put the Boston Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wade Redden will try and help Boston’s blue line slow down Pittsburgh’s offensive crew, which includes former Calgary Flame Jarome Iginla. Both Redden and Iginla were picked in the first round of the 1995 NHL Draft, as Redden went second overall behind Bryan Berard and Iginla went 11th overall to the Dallas Stars. Nine picks after Iginla the Calgary Flames picked Denis Gauthier. After being named to the QMJHL All-Star team and winning the Emile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy for QMJHL’s best defenseman in 1995-1996, Gauthier went …

2013 Year in Review: Oliver Lauridsen

It’s hard to give an overall review of a player that wasn’t expected to play for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2013 season, but Oliver Lauridsen played respectively considering the situation he was put in this year. With the experience he gained this season, Lauridsen’s review for next year could be even more positive if the Flyers bring him back. Due to the overwhelming number of injuries on Philadelphia’s blue line this season, Lauridsen saw time at the NHL level. Being the first defenseman picked in the seventh round or later by the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL Entry Draft …
