Manning, Konan recalled to Flyers

The stretch run of this season which may end without a postseason promise, means certain guys will get an unexpected shot at The Show. With injuries to the Flyers defensive corps, that process is sped up a bit, as the club announced on Tuesday afternoon that they recalled defensemen Brandon Manning and Matt Konan from the Adirondack Phantoms. Konan was signed to an entry-level contract last April after spending five seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League in Canadian juniors. Manning, meanwhile, will get his second recall with the Flyers and first this season. He totaled …

Future Flyers Report: Straka signs an entry-level deal, Gostisbehere named an All-American, Wellwood suffers major injury, OHL/WHL playoff updates

The Philadelphia Flyers’ organization signed forward Petr Straka this week. The 6’0″ 194-pound skater is currently helping Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL in their postseason run, as the club is set to take on Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the semifinals. Picked 55th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2010 NHL Draft, Straka had 41 goals and 41 assists in 55 games for Baie-Comeau during the regular season. He also eight goals and 10 helpers in Drakkar’s eight postseason games so far this postseason, which is good enough for third overall in the QMJHL playoffs. In the NCAA, Shayne Gostisbehere …

Enroth shuts out Flyers in Buffalo

The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their fourth straight contest today in Buffalo with a 1-0 loss to the Sabres. Jhonas Enroth stopped 29 shots for his first shutout this season, while Christian Ehrhoff had the game’s lone goal in the first minute of the third period. Despite a late-game flurry by the Orange and Black, the visitors couldn’t put a single shot past Enroth to extend the game. With several chances in the final minute of the game, Danny Briere rang one off the crossbar with one second left to make it that much more painful. “It’s just the way things are …

He retired with a record of 95-86-31, five shutouts, a save percentage of .902 and a goals-against average of 2.95. The 32-year-old goalie was plucked in the 1998 draft by Philadelphia in the sixth round (168th overall). Senators end losing streak, top undisciplined Flyers

As befits a month whose weather can’t decide whether it wants to be February or July, the Philadelphia Flyers continued their April slate by not deciding if they wanted to win or lose Thursday’s game until the final minutes of regulation. It was sped along by Claude Giroux’s double minor for high sticking, which led to Colin Greening’s game winner with 5:36 left in regulation that helped the Ottawa Senators to a 3-1 victory. Zack Smith and Daniel Alfredsson also lit the lamp, while Robin Lehner stopped 24 shots as the Senators, who managed to snap a season-worst five-game losing …

Laughton to finish out season with Phantoms

The strange and wonderful hockey journey of Scott Laughton continues on Thursday, as the organization pressed the “up” button on his elevator and announced he will spend the remainder of the season with the Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract. A Flyers insider first reported the news this morning. It’s a bit of a whirlwind for the youngster, who on Monday was given a five-game suspension by the Ontario Hockey League for an illegal hit while playing for the Oshawa Generals. Laughton, who made the Flyers’ roster off an abbreviated training camp before being sent back to juniors, was given …

Grossmann out 2-3 weeks with concussion

The Season of Wither for the Flyers defense corps continues, with the revelation that Nicklas Grossmann will miss an additional 2-to-3 weeks with a concussion. The news is not new, nor has it been released by the club officially, but multiple reports have stated the case along with the updated timetable on Wednesday. Grossmann has been out since March 18 — a 4-2 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning — with what has been called an upper-body injury. The 28-year-old Swede enjoyed a good run in his first “full” season with Philadelphia, with a goal and four points along …

Breaking down the Bullies: Still making mental mistakes…

With nine games left in the season, there is only one conclusion left to draw: this group of players just isn’t very smart. Fresh off a loss to the playoff-bound yet beatable New York Islanders, the Flyers can pretty much call it a year. Instead, they are calling it a lack of mental awareness for the 22nd night in 39 contests (an above average amount for those keeping score at home – you know, in the standings). Scott Hartnell said they needed to be smarter. Peter Laviolette said the difference is ‘making a different decision at a different time in …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers aren’t out yet, Pens clinch the division, Islanders sit in seventh, Devils endure long losing streak

The Philadelphia Flyers entered this week on a winning streak, but they left it on a losing skid and can now only hope they receive some help to make the postseason. With four of their final nine games coming up in the next week, the Orange and Black will likely find out if they will be heading to the playoffs by April 17th. The Flyers won their third straight game on Wednesday night with a 5-3 comeback decision over the Montreal Canadiens in Philly. Wayne Simmonds tied the game with a little over five minutes left before Erik Gustafsson’s first …

4-1 loss to Islanders puts Flyers further out of playoff picture

The Philadelphia Flyers lost one of the biggest games in their season tonight at the Nassau Coliseum with a 4-1 defeat to the New York Islanders. Matt Moulson and John Tavares both had a goal and an assist in the win for the Isles, while Brad Boyes and Colin McDonald both recorded two-assist nights. Evgeni Nabokov registered the victory with 26 saves on 27 shots against. Steve Mason was in net tonight for the Flyers and played better than his 28 saves on 31 shots would imply. With a few crucial saves in the second and third periods, Mason’s only flaw …
