Then and Now: Janne Niinimaa

What do Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, and Janne Niinimaa all have in common? They were all drafted in the 1993 NHL Entry draft. How many were drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers? Only Janne Niinimaa. Pronger went second, to the Hartford Whalers, while Timonen could be considered the hidden gem of the draft going 250nd to the Los Angeles Kings. Well, we know what Pronger and Timonen are doing with their careers now, but what about Niinimaa? Before the aforementioned question is answered, let us remember Niinimaa’s brief time spent in Philly. Spending three seasons with Jokerit in the SM-liiga after …

RICE & MICE: Labrum tears…It’s all in the hips

Ok, so there’s a labrum in the shoulder, but I’m talking about hips so, for right now, it’s all in the hips. It seems that hip injuries are all the rage these days and not just in the NHL. Hip labrum injuries can also occur in golf, baseball, soccer and basketball as well as hockey. However, hip labrum tears are almost an epidemic in hockey over the past several years. Goaltenders are especially prone to labrum tears. This can be attributed in part to the butterfly style that most goalies use, however it’s not an injury that’s excusive to butterfly …

Atlantic Watch: 4/6-4/12

With only two games this week, the Flyers went 1-0-1 capturing the Atlantic Division title. Although they still aren’t playing their best hockey, the Flyers hung on to second place in the conference for a first-round playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres. With the first game scheduled for tomorrow, the Flyers hope to benefit from having home-ice advantage. Even though they played one of their best periods in the week, the Flyers had only a 1-0 lead going into the second period Friday night in Buffalo. After both teams scored a pair of goals in the middle period, a ridiculous …

Leighton clears re-entry waivers

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that goaltender Michael Leighton cleared re-entry waivers and will report to the club later today. Leighton has made just one NHL appearance this season, allowing all four goals in a 7-4 victory at Los Angeles on December 30. He went 14-12-3 with a 2.22 goals-against average, five shutouts and a .923 save percentage for an awful Adirondack Phantoms club. Multiple sources in the region have reported via Twitter and other means that Leighton will accompany the Flyers to Buffalo for their game on Friday night. Several sources suggest the 29-year-old may start that …

Atlantic Watch: 3/30-4/5

If panic hadn’t set in yet, it definitely has now. In a week they had four games to help better their chances of winning both the division and the conference, the Flyers lost every game managing to only gain one point all week long. Adding on to the recent worries about playing lazy and horrible lately, the talent of the teams who beat Philly this week should also cause the Flyers to panic. Playing three teams out of the playoff race, the Flyers dropped their games with Atlanta, New Jersey, and Ottawa in regulation. They were able to salvage a point …
