Kennedy scores winner in overtime, Flyers lose 2-1 in Pittsburgh

Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Flyers they couldn’t continue their annual tradition of ending a lengthy Pittsburgh Penguins’ winning streak, as the Pens squeaked out a 2-1 overtime win at the CONSOL Energy Center tonight. Tyler Kennedy’s fifth goal of this shortened season beat Ilya Bryzgalov 2:33 into overtime, as Pittsburgh extended their winning streak to 12 games. Claude Giroux was the lone Flyer to beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the loss, while Sidney Crosby took advantage off a 5-on-3 power play late in the contest to send it past regulation. After having five days off, the Philadelphia Flyers will now play five games over the next eight days as they attempt to claw their way back into the playoff picture. As of today, Philadelphia is just three points out of the bottom of the Eastern Conference and five points out of the eighth and final playoff spot. The Philadelphia Flyers didn’t help their case to make the 2013 postseason this week, as they only earned two points over three games. To make matters worse, the Orange and Black will endure a five-day break to let the other teams in the Eastern Conference catch up with them in games played. The Philadelphia Flyers lost another pivotal game tonight in Tampa Bay, as the Lightning handed the visitors a 4-2 loss. Teddy Purcell deposited the game-winner halfway through the third period, while Steven Stamkos recorded his 200th goal in the NHL in a two-point effort. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the only Flyers to beat Anders Lindback, as Tampa Bay’s goaltender made 28 stops for the victory. This was a good week to see how the Philadelphia Flyers stack up against some of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. The results however, were not good. The Flyers, now losers of three straight, will look to find any kind of way to get back on track and win some games going forward of they will be golfing in May instead of playing Stanley Cup Playoff hockey.
