Buy, Buy Baby

PAUL HOLMGREN, PETER LAVIOLETTE, DANNY BRIERE, ILYA BRYZGALOV, and CLAUDE GIROUX sit down at a table in Holmgren’s office in the Wells Fargo Center.   PAUL HOLMGREN Gentlemen, we are here today to discuss what we are doing with our two salary cap compliance buyouts. Ilya and Danny, you are here to tell us why you should remain with the team. Peter and Claude are here for their input as coach and team captain. Any questions?   ILYA BRYZGALOV When will we be getting the pie and punch? Is the punch Hawaiian? Best punch.   HOLMER I told Ed that …

Flight Plan: North and South East

The Philadelphia Flyers are feeling a little bit better about themselves today as they beat the Boston Bruins yesterday by a score of 3-1. Despite losing three of their last four games, they gained a point in two of them and are currently just four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. This week will see them host the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, before travelling north to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets. You can purchase tickets to all Philadelphia Flyers games here: http://www.tiqiq.com/nhl/philadelphia-flyers-tickets/?publisherid=1260333 Unfortunately for the Flyers, they got hit …

Remembrance of Things Past

With every passing day and every passing game as the end of the 2013 season unravels before our eyes during this five-game homestand, it’s important to gain and keep perspective. We get it. You put your heart and soul and money towards this team. You have Facebook and Twitter, you are upset and have every right to complain about the way the Flyers seem to be circling the drain when a playoff spot is tantalizingly out of reach. You have the means to voice that displeasure, and you do. But why do those 140-character missives of bitterness and frustration seem …

Rumors and Rumblings: Brent Burns on the blue line?

With the trade deadline less than a week away, the rumor mill is kicking into full gear.  According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily News, Paul Holmgrem has reported interest in Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks. Seravalli states “After Sharks GM Doug Wilson unloaded defenseman Douglas Murray to Pittsburgh on Monday, many pointed toward veteran blue liner Dan Boyle and linked him to the Flyers.  Turns out, Boyle was simply the red herring. Instead, the Flyers’ brass wanted a closer look at Brent Burns, among others” Brent Burns would be a welcome addition to the Philadelphia Flyers’ blue line, but …

Rumor mill: Dan Boyle and, yet again, Bobby Ryan

The most glaring hole on this Philadelphia Flyers roster is the lack of a true number one defenseman.  According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal and Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, Dan Boyle is on the trade block and the Philadelphia Flyers are interested. “If, however, the San Jose Sharks are willing to trade the 36-year-old Boyle, who has a year left on his six-year, $40 million contract with a whopping $6.6 million cap hit, the Flyers have interest” Panaccio wrote. And Matheson stated, “He’d be excellent in Philadelphia, where the Flyers are crying for offence, but again, his age …

Crashing the Crease: Ilya Bryzgalov Cannot Succeed in Philadelphia

This week’s Crashing the Crease comes to you with a somber tone, as the Flyers’ season appears primed to crash and burn. Some of the same wretched storylines we’re so used to being beaten over the head with are creeping into view: “Should [insert Flyers coach] be worried about his job? Who should the Flyers next goalie be? What major move will the Flyers make to fix this?” Part of the issue, in my mind, is this overly reactive approach from the top down. Don’t get me wrong — I love and respect what Ed Snider did for the city …

The Empire Strikes Bryz

ILYA BRYZGALOV and PAUL HOLMGREN walk down a hallway in the Wells Fargo Center.   BRYZ …and then I tells the husky that it is me who should be using the toilet!   HOLMER That’s wonderful, Ilya. Listen, you know your new Star Wars helmet? Bryzgalov proceeds to make blaster and lightsaber noises like C3PO telling a story to the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi (note: Estebomb always has been and always will be a huge nerd. Shut up.) Holmgren looks at him, stone faced.   HOLMER Well, I spoke to George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, and …

Flyers Hockey: The Team

Since its early years, the Philadelphia Flyers have been known for a certain type of hockey — hard-hitting and gritty with a “never say die” attitude. Just before the 1969-1970 season, team owner Ed Snider was fed up with the team being manhandled in the playoffs, and told his then-General Manager Bud Poile to acquire players to make the team bigger and stronger. Thus began the reign of the Broad Street Bullies, a group of players — with Bobby Clarke and Dave Schultz at the helm — who were not only big and tough, but skilled. And feared. Now, that …

Homer, Gagne talk about busy Tuesday

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Flyers GM Paul Holmgren Will Gagne make the team better? PH:  “He improves our depth up front automatically. Obviously with the injury bug and Matt Read being out and now we lost Tye McGinn last night for a few weeks. We have some holes.  Simon is a guy who has a lot of experience and played in a lot of positions, penalty kill, power play and regular shifts.  He is a good two way player that can skate.   We think he will add to us a lot.” What’s wrong with Tye? PH:  “He has a …

Draft Eligibles: Ryan Pulock (WHL)

Although it may be cold outside and the NHL has just begun it’s never too early to take a look at upcoming draft eligible players for the 2013 draft, which will be held up the turnpike in Newark. This week I’m taking a look at defenseman Ryan Pulock of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. In 43 games played thus far for Brandon, Pulock has 10 goals, 27 assists good for 37 points. He is also a plus 2 on the season. Pulock did miss two weeks in early January this year with bone chips in his wrist. That injury should …
