Bruins Trample Flyers 6-0

The Bruins scored early and often in their 6-0 beating of the Flyers earlier today in Philadelphia. Benoit Pouliot netted the game-winner in the first minute of the game as Tim Thomas denied 31 shots in his fourth shutout of the season. Ilya Bryzgalov was pulled 7:06 into the second period after he allowed his fifth goal on the 20th shot he faced. Zdeno Chara had the Goride Howe hat trick while Rich Peverley had three assists as the loss ended the Flyers’ seven-game winning streak and improved Boston’s winning streak to four games. Boston may have scored six goals, but all they …

The need for D

Over the past 110 regular season games stretching back to the beginning of last season, Chris Pronger skated for a mere 63 of those games. A plethora of differing injuries kept him out of the lineup for long stretches. Now, he is out indefinitely with what is being called “concussion-like symptoms”. Or you know, as the rest of us call it, a concussion. Barely into the second season of his seven-year contract extension, he rarely looks like his typical, grade-A self. The older he gets, the more he cuts back, playing a less physical and less aggressive style, likely in an …

The 731 days and nights of Peter Laviolette

It began with a whimper, but how will it end? That’s the question I find myself asking, as the second anniversary of Peter Laviolette’s hiring passes. We’re at the halfway point for the tenure of most NHL head coaches, so while there’s no question Lavy’s got some good things on his ledger, it’s a given that going forward, we’re simply going to experience the back end of his time in Philadelphia. It was a big step for the organization to bring in the Massachusetts native, then just two days from his 45th birthday. He was an American — only the second …

Briere Caps Flyers’ Comeback In Overtime Against Struggling Isles

It’s not how you start, but how you finish.  The Flyers lived up to that motto on Thanksgiving Eve as they overcame an early 3-1 deficit in New York to beat the Islanders 4-3 in overtime. Danny Briere scored the Flyers’ final two goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky relieved Ilya Bryzgalov after the first period and didn’t allow a single goal on 23 shots. Both Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn had two points on the night while the Flyers extended their winning streak against the Islanders to seven games. At the end of the first minute, the game was tied. However, instead of the …

Flight Plan Week of 11.20.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers were on a pretty good run, collecting points in eight straight games. That streak dated all the way back to October 27 when they played the Winnipeg Jets in a wild game where 17 goals were scored and the Flyers ended up losing 9-8. As fate would have it, their most recent loss in regulation would also come at the hands of the Jets, by a score of 6-4 on Saturday. For some reason, Peter Laviolette cannot win games against either the Jets or the Atlanta Thrashers, doing so only once in his tenure as the head …
