CBA Explained: No move/trade clauses

I discussed no move and no trade clauses in my CBA 101 series last year, however, the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) introduced a slight tweak to those rules that we have already seen come to fruition this NHL season. You may as well call this the “Jeff Carter clause”. From the CBA Summary of terms: “No Move/No Trade Clauses that are negotiated as part of a contract extension may become effective immediately upon execution of, but prior to the effectiveness of, the extension contract, provided: a) The Player is otherwise currently eligible to have a No Move/No Trade Clause, and b) …

Fedotenko scores in overtime, gives Philly improbable two points over Caps

Ruslan Fedotenko beat Braden Holtby in overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 5-4 win in front of the home crowd tonight. After Kimmo Timonen tied the game with just under 10 seconds left in regulation, the blue liner set up Fedotenko for the game-winning tally in the extra frame to grab the Flyers two points in the standings. With Ilya Bryzgalov pulled, the Orange and Black provided an immense amount of pressure in the final minute before Claude Giroux found Timonen at the point for a slap shot that beat Holtby’s glove to make it 4-4 with a little …

Flight Plan: North and South East

The Philadelphia Flyers are feeling a little bit better about themselves today as they beat the Boston Bruins yesterday by a score of 3-1. Despite losing three of their last four games, they gained a point in two of them and are currently just four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. This week will see them host the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, before travelling north to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets. You can purchase tickets to all Philadelphia Flyers games here: http://www.tiqiq.com/nhl/philadelphia-flyers-tickets/?publisherid=1260333 Unfortunately for the Flyers, they got hit …

A Song of Ice and Flyer

Game of Thrones returns to your television boxes and illegal pirated internet feeds tonight! To commemorate this, our own Sir Bomb of Este has matched up a bunch of Game of Thrones characters with the Flyers and other NHL stars. Big thanks to all the people on Twitter who helped with the initial ideas for this back in January. Please note that Steve has not read the books and is basing this off of the first two seasons of the TV show.   Ned Stark – Chris Pronger He lost his head Cheap jokes aside, Pronger was the leader of …

Bryzgalov leads Flyers to 3-1 win over Bruins

The Philadelphia Flyers grabbed two points today with a 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins today at the Wells Fargo Center. The trio of Mike Knuble, Matt Read, and Ruslan Fedotenko found the back of the net today, as the only visitor to beat Ilya Bryzgalov in victory was Nathan Horton. Bryz had 33 saves to Tuukka Rask’s 19, as Rask allowed two goals on 21 shots. With both teams coming off of bad losses, the Flyers scored the game’s first two goals and managed to earn two points despite being outshot 34-22 in the tilt. Thanks to Bryzgalov’s goaltending …

Flyers acquire Huskins from Red Wings

A Flyers insider reported and the club later confirmed that defensive help is on the way…and it’s not from Adirondack. Minutes into Saturday’s Flyers-Bruins tilt, word came down that Paul Holmgren worked the phones and acquired little-used blueliner Kent Huskins from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2014. According to the Wings’ Twitter, it is a seventh-round choice. In true Flyers fashion, it’s a steal: if they don’t sign Huskins to a contract by next October, that conditional pick is off the board. Huskins has always been a back-pair defenseman throughout his career, which …

Remembrance of Things Past

With every passing day and every passing game as the end of the 2013 season unravels before our eyes during this five-game homestand, it’s important to gain and keep perspective. We get it. You put your heart and soul and money towards this team. You have Facebook and Twitter, you are upset and have every right to complain about the way the Flyers seem to be circling the drain when a playoff spot is tantalizingly out of reach. You have the means to voice that displeasure, and you do. But why do those 140-character missives of bitterness and frustration seem …

Cap advantage recapture makes trading for Shea Weber far too risky to even consider

Recently, Flyers beat report Tim Panaccio offered the following prediction for this summer: Let me be first to predict: #flyers re-visit NSH and Shea Weber this summer — Tim Panaccio (@tpanotchCSN) March 29, 2013 Even outside of the fact that I’m not sure Nashville would be eager to trade him after paying him such massive sums of money in his first year, I would argue, with all due respect to Tim, that it would be a terrible, terrible decision because of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement’s (CBA) “cap advantage recapture system”. If I were an NHL general manager, I wouldn’t …

Lauridsen gets first taste of NHL action, Coburn out with shoulder separation

It’s “D” for “decimated” rather than for defense as the Flyers continue their five-game homestand. On Friday, ahead of a huge matchup against the Boston Bruins, the club recalled defenseman Oliver Lauridsen from the Adirondack Phantoms. “He’s a big guy that can skate,” Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said to a Flyers insider. “I called down there [to Adirondack] and the reports on him are good. I really liked the game he had [when the Phantoms played] here. He was physical.” The 6-foot-6 native of Denmark, taken by the Flyers in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, will get …
