Panthers get revenge and beat Flyers in a shootout

The Philadelphia Flyers were looking to extend their win streak to a season- high three games, but fell short as the Florida Panthers defeated them by a 3-2 count in a shootout on Thursday, avenging their previous meeting in which they lost 7-1 at home on January 26. Jose Theodore got the win for the Panthers, and was the first star of the game, making 30 saves on 32 shots, as well as both chances he faced in the shootout. Timonen to come back for one more year

There have been rumblings, which finally came true. The steadiest defenseman to patrol the Philadelphia Flyers blueline since Eric Desjardins has decided to return for one more season. Kimmo Timonen will be back in Orange and Black in 2013-14, thanks to a one-year deal worth $6,000,000. Eklund was first with the news, citing an undisclosed teammate on Wednesday night who hinted that the 37-year-old Finn was going to re-up. Timonen has contributed 28 goals and 211 points over 327 regular-season games since coming over in a July, 2007 deal, and has soldiered through a number of injuries as he has …

The Philadelphia Flyers seem to heading in the right direction after they recorded wins in their last two games. After they lost both the game and a crucial player on Friday, the Orange and Black pulled off back-to-back wins in their last two contests. The Flyers start a four-game week tomorrow, as they finish the seven-day stretch with a pair of games that start a lengthy road trip. On Friday, the Washington Capitals handed Philly a 3-2 loss at the Verizon Center. Tom Sestito recorded his first career two-goal game with Philadelphia — overshadowing the return of defenseman Matt Carle to Philadelphia — as the Flyers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 2-1 score in their second meeting in the last nine days. Draft Eligibles: Ryan Pulock (WHL)

Although it may be cold outside and the NHL has just begun it’s never too early to take a look at upcoming draft eligible players for the 2013 draft, which will be held up the turnpike in Newark. This week I’m taking a look at defenseman Ryan Pulock of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. In 43 games played thus far for Brandon, Pulock has 10 goals, 27 assists good for 37 points. He is also a plus 2 on the season. Pulock did miss two weeks in early January this year with bone chips in his wrist. That injury should …

CBA Explained: Contract variability

This week we are taking a look at contract variability which is essentially the amount that salary can vary from one year to the next within a player’s contract. Previously, only the 100 Percent Rule existed, which essentially states that salary can’t vary by more than 50% of the lesser salary in the first two years of the contract.
