Voracek’s Hat Trick Puts Flyers Past Penguins in Pittsburgh

The Philadelphia Flyers edged out a 6-5 win at the CONSOL Energy Center tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a ridiculous contest between the Atlantic Division opponents. Jakub Voracek recorded a hat trick and Wayne Simmonds had a three-point night, as well as a Gordie Howe hat trick, in a wild one-goal win on the road. Ilya Bryzgalov had 27 saves and Tomas Vokoun registered 26 saves, as the pair struggled in the 32 shots they saw apiece. Paul Martin had a three-assist evening, while Evgeni Malkin and James Neal each had a goal and an assist in the emotional defeat. …

The Gagarin Cup Playoffs: KHL Postseason Starts Today

The KHL playoffs start today, as 16 of the league’s 26 clubs compete for the Gagarin Cup. Since the NHL and KHL are huge competitors, it’s interesting to look at the players on the current KHL playoff teams to see just how many are former Philadelphia Flyers or NHLers. On top of that, some clubs’ prospects are in the 16-team field. Although the Philadelphia Flyers lost two of their three games this week, the Orange and Black finished the week with a resounding 7-0 victory over a divisional opponent. Philly will look to gain ground in the Eastern Conference this week with four games over the next seven days, one of which is against the Pittsburgh Penguins and another two against a pair of the teams at the bottom of the standings. One player who has climbed up the draft boards this season is Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds defenseman Darnell Nurse. Nurse is currently ranked 10th overall by ISS in its January rankings and is listed as the number one OHL defenseman draft prospect, and number two overall OHL player behind Ottawa 67’s forward Sean Monahan. While Nurse’s talent is already present, he will most likely be drafted on future potential. At 6’5 190 pounds, Nurse certainly has room on his frame to add muscle and size.
