Crashing the Crease: The Book on Bryz

Ilya Bryzgalov was brought to Philadelphia to do the seemingly impossible: stop the “goaltending carousel” that has been the counterpoint to nearly every success the organization has had in the past two decades. Marked by dismal lows and remarkable highs, the first few games of the 2011-2012 season kicked off seemingly well, but rapidly started losing steam. These early-season struggles persisted and eventually culminated in Bryz’s announcement of his benching at the Winter Classic, much to the delight of the Flyers coaching staff. Goalies are notorious for being quirky and somewhat unsettling.  They are typically the kind of guy that …

Wednesday wellness tips: Weight loss

In lieu of the regular RICE & MICE content for some of the off-season, I’m going to do a series on health and wellness. I hope you enjoy it and as always, if you have specific questions, please don’t hesitate to leave comments or send me an email. This is not intended to be medical advice, nor should it take the place of you consulting a medical provider. Please see your doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner before starting any diet or weight loss program. Quite often I have patients come in that want to lose weight, but necessarily know how. …

Then and Now: Josh Gratton

Tim Ramholt never played a game for the Philadelphia Flyers. In fact, the only NHL game Ramholt ever took part in was as a member of the Calgary Flames in the club’s  4-1 defeat to the Anaheim Ducks on November 29, 2007. In the 2008-09 season, Ramholt was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, taking part in seven games for the Philadelphia Phantoms before being shipped to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Chris Gratton’s cousin, winger Josh Gratton. Potting two goals and three assists in seven contests to start that season with the Milwaukee Admirals, Gratton split time between …

NHL HOF: Sakic, Sundin in; Roenick, Lindros out

Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin will join the ranks of the illustrious, named two of the four new inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Joining the first-time candidates in the 2012 class are Pavel Bure and Adam Oates. The announcement was made Tuesday and the induction ceremony will take place November 12 in Toronto. Sakic was one of the few players who spent his entire career with one franchise. Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week Nick D and Bob H renew their shenanigans, debating whether or not Terry Murray is the right man for the job with the Adirondack Phantoms. Point, from Nick:  There’s no doubt Terry Murray is well traveled and versed as a coach in the NHL. He has been a head coach and an assistant coach for numerous teams at the highest level, including the Philadelphia Flyers. His philosophy has always been …

Flyers Faithful is pleased to have Adam Kimelman of NHL.com, Marc Siciliano of Kukla’s Corner, Dan MacNeal of Crimespree Hockey, James Minger of Flyers-Philia, and Flyers Faithful’s own Kevin Christmann participate in the current iteration of Five Questions. This is the second of a five-part series focusing on Free Agency that will run all week. With there already being several trades throughout the league for an impending free agent’s rights, and it being a common occurrence since the lockout, do you expect we will continue to see that? Do you see the Flyers as considering that option as they have in the past? If so, for whom? Adam Kimelman: I don’t see it happening …

CBA 101 Part 6: Tagging Space

Over the past two seasons Flyers fans may have heard of two potential re-signings that couldn’t take place because of “tagging space”. Currently that re-signing is Matt Carle, whereas last year it was Ville Leino. Ultimately, Leino ended up signing a contract with Buffalo once he hit free agency, and we’ll have to wait to see how the Carle situation plays out. As detailed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement Section 50.5 (f)(iii) (iii) A Club shall only be permitted to sign a Player to an “extension” of the existing SPC in the amount of: (A) the SPC of the Player …

With Free Agency approaching, let’s discuss Holmgren Economics

It’s rare in today’s sports world, and especially in the world of the Philadelphia Flyers, for the general population to agree on something. Let’s face it, more often than not the topic at hand tends to be polarizing. People rarely sit in the middle with indifference. You have your lovers, and you have your haters. Whether you’re discussing Matt Carle, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, a goaltending carousel, or if a particular trade rumor would be beneficial, there’s usually a clear divide among the masses. Paul Holmgren is no exception in this regard. I’ll preface this article by saying if you …
