JVR Scores In Final Minute, Flyers Beat Hawks 5-4

James van Riemsdyk needed to find his way to the net in a crucial non-conference game on Thursday — and he did just that, scoring in the final minute of regulation to complete a two-goal night as the Flyers handed the Chicago Blackhawks a 5-4 loss in the Hawks’ first appearance in Philly since the infamous Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist, while Claude Giroux recorded a pair of assists. Jacob Voracek and Harry Zolnierczyk also added tallies as Ilya Bryzgalov survived a late-game meltdown to post his first win since December …

Atlantic Watch: 12/28-1/3

The Flyers went 1-1-0 in their two games this past week – losing the much anticipated Winter Classic on Monday afternoon to the New York Rangers. Due to Ilya Bryzgalov’s recent struggles in net, Sergei Bobrovsky earned both starts this week stopping 54 of the 59 shots he faced. Philly, which has dropped five of their last seven games, looks to turn things around this week against the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators. The Orange and Black continued their dominance over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the CONSOL Energy Center with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night. Matt Read earned his third …

3 on 3 for the week of 1.1.2012

Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3, a look back at the week that was for the Orange and Black. The Flyers were 1-1 last week, getting two points out of a possible four. Let’s get to this weeks 3 “Hot” and 3 “Not” players of the week. 3 “Hot”: Jaromir Jagr: In his return to Pittsburgh, Jagr scored the go ahead goal in the second period and Philadelphia was on its way to its fourth straight victory at the CONSOL Energy Center. The future Hall of Famer made a sick move and scored a pretty backhand goal and then saluted the …

Rupp Scores Twice, Rangers Hand Flyers Classic Loss

In a lineup that boasts Brad Richards, Marian Gaborik, and Ryan Callahan, it was Mike Rupp who hurt the Flyers most, as he scored a pair of goals in the Rangers 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park in the 2012 Winter Classic on a blustery Monday afternoon. Richards potted the game-winner early in the third period, while Brayden Schenn and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers, who dropped their third game of the season to New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves on the night including all 10 of the Flyers’ shots in the third period — and saved the Rangers’ bacon in the final seconds by …

Gretz does the dirt to the Flyers, 30 years on

After all these years, it’s still hard to believe that the Philadelphia Flyers were the team Wayne Gretzky victimized en route to yet another potentially-unbreakable NHL single-season record. I could see it against Calgary with the Battle of Alberta, and even against the lowly Canucks or Devils. But no, it had to be against the Orange and Black in a down year. But it happened, December 30, 1981. Needing five goals to reach 50 in just his 39th game, Number 99 decided to get them all in one night — and do it against one of the tougher teams in …

Jagr And Talbot Score In Return To Pittsburgh, Flyers Win 4-2

Jaromir Jagr saluted the crowd after his second-period goal, while Max Talbot provided the empty-netter as the Flyers walked into the CONSOL Energy Center on Thursday night and strolled out with a 4-2 win. Matt Read put home his 12th of the season late in the second period for the game-winner as Sergei Bobrovsky grabbed the victory with 24 saves. Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy scored for the Pens while Marc-Andre Fleury had 19 saves in the Pens’ second loss in December to the Flyers. To start the game, Staal needed only 44 seconds before he put home a goal to give the Pens an early 1-0 lead. …

Atlantic Watch: 12/21-12/27

For the first time since the middle of November, the Flyers went a week where they only earned two points as they went 1-2-0 in three road games. Although the Flyers had the help of Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn returning to the line-up, they managed to end the week with a pair of losses as they fell out of the top position in the division. The highlight of the Flyers’ upcoming schedule is The Winter Classic on Monday against the New York Rangers. After missing the previous four games, Giroux returned to the line-up last Wednesday to lead the Flyers …

Stamkos And Garon Lead Lightning In 5-1 Victory Over Flyers

Steven Stamkos had a two-goal night and Mathieu Garon made 31 saves to led the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-1 home victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite out shooting the Lightning 32-16 and forcing them into 11 icings while Tampa Bay didn’t force them into any, the Flyers leave Tampa Bay after an unfortunate loss they didn’t deserve. Scott Hartnell scored the Flyers’ only goal of the game while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped a mere 11 of the 16 shots he faced as the Flyers lost for the fourth time in their last five games.  Hartnell was snakebitten early on, victimized by Garon with a huge save during 5-on-5 …
