Around the Net 3.20.12

Welcome to Around the Net, a look at the Philadelphia Flyers on and off the ice. This week we look at Andrej Meszaros and his back, Claude Giroux and whether he misses playing with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, Ilya Bryzgalov earning another NHL player of the week honor and more. Meszaros to have surgery, miss 6-8 weeks This could be a damaging blow to the Flyers defense, but with the additions of Kubina and Grossman and Brandon Manning’s solid play thus far, the Flyers should be able to live with Mez for a short while. Hartnell plays “Beat the Clock,” Flyers shame Penguins in OT

Wonders never cease. On the ropes and down 2-0 to a steamroller of a Pittsburgh Penguins club looking for their 12th straight win, the Philadelphia Flyers put together one of the most unlikely turnarounds in recent memory and took a 3-2 home decision on Sunday afternoon. Scott Hartnell was the hero, as his second goal of the game, coming with 0.9 seconds left in overtime, proved to be the winner. It came as a result of a defensive breakdown. Bryzgalov Blanks Panthers, Flyers Extend Win Streak To Four

The Flyers dominated the Florida Panthers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for a 5-0 win, which extend their winning streak to four games. Ilya Bryzgalov had another amazing performance, as he made 28 saves for his second shutout in a three-game span. Bryzgalov’s fourth shutout of the season came without the help of defensemen Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, and Pavel Kubina. Bryzgalov earned the first star of the game and it was clearly deserved. The Flyers’ goalie, who recorded his 27th career shutout, made crucial saves early in the game, after both of the bouts in the contest, and late in …
