Flyers sit at 49 contracts with decisions to make; intriguing training camp battles

With the recent signing of restricted free agent Brandon Manning, the Philadelphia Flyers now sit at 49 contracts on the 50 contract reserve limit. Two of those contracts could slide, meaning they would not count towards the 50 contract limit, if Laughton or Stolarz are sent back to Juniors (a likelihood for the latter). The Flyers are currently just over $2 million over the league’s upper limit, so they will have to shed some cap space. The likely candidates are defenseman Braydon Coburn or Andrej Meszaros (or Grossmann to a lesser extent). The Flyers have nine blue-liners signed to one-way contract; …

Ranking the Flyers’ Prospects: Forwards

The Philadelphia Flyers prospect pool is considered one of the weakest in all of the NHL mainly because of their lack of an NHL top 50 prospect. Personally, I was not impressed with their draft back in June and I honestly think they missed out on some players who will be stars at the next level. Despite that, Philadelphia does possess an abundance of gritty and physical forwards. Players like Jason Akeson, Petr Straka, and Tye McGinn come to mind.  However, they lack elite/top tier talent at forward. Scott Laughton and Tye McGinn are the most NHL ready prospects in …

Flyers draft day predictions

We are at a point in time where we can start counting down hours until the draft but there’s still plenty of time for things to happen between now and when Mr. Irrelevant gets picked. So, let’s take a stab at what happens between now and then in what may be the most unpredictable draft day in years. (Keep in mind that this is just for fun and I have about as much of a chance of being right as I do of winning the lottery.) The Flyers have been linked to Pittsburgh defenseman, Kris Letang, who allegedly has Philadelphia …

Cha-ching!

It’s buyout day (and errybody celebratin’)

Today is the day that we bid farewell to two of the highest paid Flyers, Ilya Bryzgalov and Danny Briere, as the team will exercise their two compliance buyouts on them. This leaves a gaping hole in net (one could argue there’s been a gaping hole there for 15 or so years, though) and one fewer center on a team that arguably has too many centers. But do they? Claude Giroux can play wing and The team has toyed with the idea of moving Brayden Schenn there too. Beyond Scott Laughton and maybe Nick Cousins, there is little in the …
