In 2004, the Philadelphia Flyers handed the Tampa Bay Lightning a fifth-round pick and two sixth-round picks in the 2004 NHL Draft in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. The Bolts selected Brandon Elliott, Jan Zapletal, and Karri Ramo with the picks Philly made in the deal. The Orange and Black took defenseman Oskars Bartulis with the final pick in the third round. After putting themselves in a very big hole, the Philadelphia Flyers ended this week with two emphatic wins to show that they could be a playoff team. It might be too little too late, but the Orange and Black will carry their two-game winning streak into their upcoming seven-day stretch. The Philadelphia Flyers were the only team in the Atlantic Division not to win a game this week, as they went 0-1-1 against the Pens and Rangers. Things don’t get any easier for the Flyers over the next week, as they take on a division leader and two teams fighting to make the postseason. After a six-day break, the Flyers dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center on Sunday. The Philadelphia Flyers had a rough start to this condensed 48-game schedule as they dropped both ends of a back-to-back over the weekend. A loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins is never fun, but despite looking flat in the first period, the Flyers really only lost by one goal as the Penguins scored an empty netter late in the third period to seal the win. Late in December of 2006, the Philadelphia Flyers claimed forward Dmitry Afanasenkov off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Impressed with his three goals and three assists in 33 games, Philly decided to dress the winger for 41 games in their lowly 2006-2007 campaign. For only playing half the season for the Orange and Black, Afanasenkov’s 15 points sounds pretty impressive.
