2013 Year In Review: Danny Briere

It pains me to write Danny Briere’s year in review. Briere came to Philadelphia in the offseason of 2007, the year after the Flyers had just missed the playoffs, bringing with him a new attitude for the Flyers franchise. Along with Briere was a much-scrutinized contract that would pay the five-foot-ten, 179-pound player 52 million dollars over eight years with an annual cap hit of 6.5 million. Briere’s worth was proven immediately as he recorded the second-highest point total of his career, registering 31 goals and 41 assists in 79 games. It was not Briere’s regular season performance that would …

2013 Year in Review: Zac Rinaldo

For a franchise that is known and loved for their pugilistic dominance, it’s not surprising that one of the team’s favorite players amongst the fans is a fourth-line pest that always picks on somebody bigger than him. Winning the Gene Hart Memorial Award, helping to put one of the league’s best power plays on the ice, and leaving the goal scorers in a favorable position to start their shift is a good summary of Zac Rinaldo’s season. In terms of goals and assists, Rinaldo was on a similar pace as to what he posted in 66 games for the Philadelphia …

2013 Draft Eligibles: Anthony Mantha, from the Valley of Gold to the City of Brotherly Love?

It seems that Sean Couturier has become the popular comparison for NHL draft prospects eyeing a roster spot in their draft year. Tom Zulewski compared Sean Monahan to the Flyers’ forward, and others have raised associations between Couts and Rimouski Oceanic forward Frederik Gauthier. The latest to be linked to the former Drummondville Voltigeurs star is Anthony Mantha. Mantha and Couturier have nearly identical size, immediately drawing a link between the two players. Both also entered the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) as pure scorers, who play to put the puck in the net. Couturier altered his game to …

2013 Year in Review: Brayden Schenn

When a team trades their captain, it is inevitable that a lot of pressure will be placed on the players that come back in return. Brayden Schenn has yet to play a full season in the National Hockey League, but it’s hard to believe it based on how high expectations are on the young forward to contribute. Starting last season with injuries before finally getting a chance to stick with the club, this lockout-shortened year was his first opportunity to play an NHL season from start to finish. Though he may have fallen short of becoming a reliable secondary scoring …

Flyers Year In Review: The Bad

The Flyers season may have been a downer, but there were still positives to take out of it. Such positives were the strong play of Jakub Voracek, Luke Schenn, and the young kids on defense. Now, we take a look at the Bad. Braydon Coburn: Mistakenly, I chose Coburn as my dark-horse for the Norris trophy this year. Coburn has all the tools to be a top-tier defenseman. He has size, speed, offensive skills and awareness, as well as strong defensive prowess. Coburn plays all three phases of the game. Yet, this was not a good year for him. In …

2013 Draft Eligibles: Sean Monahan is the year’s Sean Couturier

For Ottawa 67’s center Sean Monahan, playing alongside Tyler Toffoli (47th overall, LA, ’10) Shane Prince (61st overall, OTT, ’11), and Cody Ceci (15th overall, OTT, ’12) for his first two seasons in the OHL proved to be valuable for the top OHL forward prospect in this year’s NHL draft. In 127 games playing with the trio of Ceci, Prince, and Toffoli, Monahan registered 53 goals and 125 points. These are impressive numbers for the 6’2 193 pound center from Brampton, Ontario but questions lingered about Monahan prior to the start of the 2012-13 OHL season. Can he do produce …

Simmonds’ hat trick powers Flyers past Hurricanes in Carolina

The Philadelphia Flyers were able to post a win in their first game since knowing they were eliminated from playoff contention, as they beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on the road tonight. Wayne Simmonds recorded his first career hat trick and added on an assist, while Matt Read had a goal and two assists in the win. Steve Mason earned the decision in the high-scoring affair, as he denied 26 of the Hurricanes’ 29 shots on net. Justin Peters lost with only 33 saves on 38 shots against. “It felt pretty good obviously,” Simmonds said after his big night. “I feel …

What Thornton was about to do to Bryzgalov, Bryz later did to the media

Saturday Morning Musings*

Something, something, intro paragraph. Fluff, yay! Let’s start off by facing the cold, hard truth. There is something like a 1% chance (with a 1% margin of error) that the Flyers could make the playoffs this season. Pointless wins are meaningless. Planning for next year is significantly more important at this point. So, what does that mean? Well, for starters, it does not mean that your loyalty as a fan is not contingent upon whether or not you want the team to win the remaining games of the season. The rational choice is to do what it takes to make …

Five Questions: Rebuilding the Phantoms and Titans

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, Jim Butler, James Centifonti, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. The organization has failed to produce winning clubs at the AHL and ECHL levels in recent years. With your GM cap still on, how do you go about fixing that? Is it even a big deal? John Saquella: Winning at …

Contest: Give us your feedback for a chance to win a shirt

So, we’re running a contest. Here’s the deal: We are making a shirt that includes Bobby Clarke, Ian Laperriere, and Sean Couturier. We need a fourth Flyer to add to the list with a great gap-toothed grin. That’s where you come in. Leave a comment below with your best suggestion and a link to a picture of the smiling, toothless Flyer. If your player gets chosen, you — meaning all of you who picked the same person — will get a chance to win the t-shirt you had a hand in creating. Remember, the rules are simple: You must leave …
