Lost in translation: What that offseason news really means

The offseason is filled with plenty of news, speculation, absurd rumors, and hyperbole. So, we at Flyers Faithful have decided to take our best shot at deciphering some of the things that you’ve heard recently. News: This was a great pick by the Flyers! He’s an absolute steal with a lot of upside and projects to be a Mike Richards-type player. What it sounds like: Holy crap, we traded Mike Richards for Mike Richards last year and drafted another Mike Richards this year! What it really means: The kid plays two-way hockey and probably scored a nice shorthanded goal when he was fifteen …

2012 NHL Entry Draft - Round One

Some thoughts on round one

First off, kudos to everyone who covered the draft live last night. People may joke every time a tweet pops up about a GM working the phones but those reporters worked their butts off last night. Today will be even more hectic. Well done folks. The Penguins got a lot better on paper last night and that worries many people in the Atlantic Division. The Penguins also got a lot better on paper in 2010 when they reshaped their defense by acquiring Zbynek Michalek and Paul Martin. How did that work out? Michalek was traded back to the Phoenix Coyotes …

(Final) Flyers West Update: The Future is Bright, Flyers Fans

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know by now that the Los Angeles Kings are Stanley Cup Champions. And unless you’ve been living under two rocks, you know that two of the guys who got to hoist the Cup on Monday night were Mike Richards and Jeff Carter — former Philadelphia Flyers who were traded away a little under a year ago. A lot has been said about what their Stanley Cup victory means to the Flyers. It’s left a bitter taste in some mouths, while others still believe that the trades were for the best and the …

Flyers must go all in for Weber

Caveat: It would take a lot to get Shea Weber out of Nashville as the Predators will do everything in their power to keep him. But that does not mean that the Flyers shouldn’t try their damnedest to get him. The fact of the matter is that Weber is an elite defensive talent that is the biggest missing piece standing between the Flyers and a Stanley Cup parade. Few players could realistically fill the void left by Chris Pronger. Weber is one of the select few and is just entering the prime of his career to boot. What reason do …

CBA 101 Part 3: Slide Contracts

Per the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, every NHL team is permitted to have 50 players under contract in their entire organization; including players that are not with the parent club. This was the reason that the Flyers were required to include Jon Kalinski in the trade for Pavel Kubina. The Flyers already had 50 contracts, so they could not acquire Kubina without shedding a contract first. However, it is possible to have more than 50 players under contract if you have what are called “slide contracts,” as they do not count towards the 50-contract limit. In the event that an 18 …

Flyers outworked again, lose 4-2, trail 3-1 in series

In a pivotal Game 4, the Philadelphia Flyers showed signs of frustration and were out shot 43-22 in a 4-2 loss to the Devils at the Prudential Center tonight. Dainius Zubrus registered a two-goal night, while Petr Sykora and Marek Zidlicky both had a goal and an assist in New Jersey’s third straight win in the series. Martin Brodeur made 20 saves on his 40th birthday to give Jersey a commanding 3-1 series lead. Claude Giroux assisted on Scott Hartnell’s opening goal and potted a short-handed tally for a two-point night. Kimmo Timonen and Max Talbot were the only other …

Ponikarovsky Beats Bryzgalov In Overtime, Gives Devils 4-3 Win

After a pair of failed power-play attempts in overtime, the Flyers let Alexei Ponikarovsky’s first goal of the 2012 playoffs be the game-winner in the Devils’ 4-3 victory tonight at the Prudential Center. The win gives Jersey a 2-1 series lead. Ilya Kovalchuk jumped on the Flyers’ clear in the neutral zone and caught Philly’s skaters in a line change when he hit Ponikarovsky with a pass at the Orange and Black’s blue line. With only one defender back, the Devils’ forward decided to shoot rather than pass. After Ilya Bryzgalov denied his first shot, the former Los Angeles King jumped on …

Captain Patch

The Big C

Leadership, leadership, leadership. It’s a broken record but always up there on the list of things Flyers fans will always want to talk about, second only to the goalie situation. When things are bad, it’s at the forefront of discussion, but when things are good, it fades to the background. The loss of captain Chris Pronger to injury had fans and analysts questioning what the team was going to do as far as replacing him. Would they give the “C” to either Danny Briere or Kimmo Timonen, the alternate captains? Or would they look towards the future and give it …
