Atlantic Watch: 3/28-4/3

In their four-game schedule this week, the Flyers posted a record of 2-1-1 and picked up what might be there most intense victory of the 2011-2012 regular season with their win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. It’s those same Pens that the Flyers trail by three points for fourth in the conference and the chance for home-ice advantage in the clubs’ first-round playoff series. The Orange and Black still have a shot for fourth, but they’ll need to beat a team fighting for their playoff lives along with the Pens this week. The Broad Street Bullies started off the week with …

Point/Counterpoint: The other side of Shanabanning

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Nick D. and Bob H. square off over whether or not players who are constant victims of questionable hits should also feel the wrath of Brendan Shanahan. First up, Nick: This season has seen a marked change in how the National Hockey League deals with infractions that are deemed suspension worthy. Shanahan has been doling out suspensions in an effort to change behavior, not just discipline players for their actions. …

Penguins Get Calls, Flyers Win 6-4 In Pitt

In a game of importance for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers walked into Pittsburgh today and left with a 6-4 victory. “We haven’t talked about home-ice or the Rangers, or the Penguins or the Senators. We talked about the two points. That’s really all we can control right now,” said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. “Eventually we’ll either have home-ice or we won’t.” Not only did they move to within one point of the Pens in the standings, the visitors overcame numerous non-calls from the officials and drew an end-of-the-game line brawl and hissy …

Atlantic Watch: 3/21-3/27

In their three home games this week, the Flyers were able to clinch a playoff spot with a pair of wins over teams currently sitting outside the postseason scenario. Unfortunately, Ilya Bryzgalov suffered a chip fracture in his right foot. Hopefully for Philly, Bryzgalov will be back by the end of next week when the club takes on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as part of their four-game schedule over the next few days. On Thursday, the Orange and Black earned two points against the Washington Capitals with a 2-1 shootout win at the Wells Fargo Center. Wayne Simmonds potted …

Don’t Let Go, Rose

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Atlantic Watch: 3/14-3/20

A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the only game in which the Flyers didn’t earn a point may have been their most impressive performance, as they posted 23 more shots than the Panthers in their one-goal game loss last night. Three games against three clubs that are lower in the conference standings should help the Flyers a lot over the next couple days, as the Orange and Black hope to clinch a …

Point/Counterpoint: Bryzgalov found the peace in his soul to play in Philadelphia

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Marcello D and Kim Q square off over Ilya Bryzgalov’s mental status. Point: Marcello D. Ilya Bryzgalov has become a zen master, cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce. For the second straight week, Ilya Bryzgalov was named the “First Star” by the NHL after winning eight of nine possible games in March, getting 17 of 18 possible points, posting four shutouts in five games, setting a franchise high watermark  scoreless streak, …

Flyers Fans Book Review Part One

When you start a new hobby, or obsession (more apropos in my case), there is a lot of information to learn right off the bat. When my best friend Pam introduced me to hockey and subsequently, the Flyers, a lot of names came hurtling my way. Present Flyers, past Flyers, trades, etc. I heard names like Lindros, Pelle, Hextall, Clarke and I’m one of those people who has to see things to remember them. Just hearing stuff doesn’t stick in my mind. So I knew about Pelle Lindbergh and who Bob Clarke was (I now can recognize him both from …

RICE & MICE: What’s this about a neck injury?

Ah, the ongoing saga that is Sidney Crosby’s concussion, er, broken neck, oh soft tissue neck injury. Yes, it now appears that the storyline is not a concussion after all, but a soft tissue injury in his neck that is causing concussion-like symptoms. You may now scratch your head and look confused, because I am doing the same. I am skeptical about several things here and I’m not sure where to even start, so I am going to start with the obvious statement that Crosby may just have post-concussion syndrome, nothing more, nothing less. It seems like every doctor or …

RICE & MICE: JVR’s Concussion

So, last season I wrote about the travesty that was Mark Recchi questioning the severity of the concussion that Max Paciorretty suffered during the violent collision between his head and the turnbuckle in Montreal. At the time I talked about how irresponsible it was for Recchi to pass his uninformed judgment about how severe another player’s head injury was to the media, when all head injuries should be considered severe. Thankfully, Pacioretty has returned to hockey and has been healthy this season. Unfortunately, I have seen and heard more than once, fans making the implication that James van Riemsdyk is …
