Flight Plan: Rivalry Week

The Philadelphia Flyers have won five of their last seven contests after taking a 2-1 decision yesterday against the Ottawa Senators. They have been getting good play and consistent production from their top two lines, and Ilya Bryzgalov has been steady, if not terrific, on most occasions. The Flyers have two days off before staring a week full of intense rivalry games. They begin by taking a ride up I-95 to New York to face off against the New York Rangers, returning home to host the Pittsburgh Penguins, and finally ending the week in Boston to see the Boston Bruins …

A hero returns, and a fond farewell

I feel like it was pretty obvious what I would be writing about this week. One of my all-time favorite Flyers (and your most loved Flyer) returned to Philadelphia to once again don the Orange and Black sweater. That man, of course, is #12, Simon Gagne. My love goes back to my years in high school. I recall reading about Gagne and how he would be the “next superstar” in Philadelphia. Although Gagne never gained “superstar status,” he was a star in the NHL. At just 33 years of age, Gagne – barring health issues – can continue to be …

Poll: Will Gagne’s Return Benefit the Flyers in the Long Run?

To the surprise and happiness of many a Flyers fan, the team acquired former player Simon Gagne from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Gagne spent ten years with the Flyers before being traded to Tampa Bay in the summer of 2010. After one season with the Lightning, he signed with the Los Angeles Kings and won his first Stanley Cup with them this past season. Gagne brings skill, scoring ability, and a veteran presence to the team, and his return marked a strong win for the Flyers over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. But from this point forward, …

Flyers Beat Capitals In Gagne’s Return

Claude Giroux led the way, scoring a goal and an assist, and Simon Gagne lit the lamp in his return to Philadelphia, as the Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals 4-1. The Orange and Black improved to 10-11-1 on the season and 2-2-0 on their current home stand. Scoring along with Giroux were Wayne Simmonds and Max Talbot, while goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov made his 20th start of the season and earned the win after saving 22-of-23 shots. Joel Ward scored the Capitals lone goal late in regulation. Starting goaltender Braden Holtby was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals …

Breaking down the Bullies: Gagne makes sense

It’s becoming an ugly trend for the Flyers. Week after week, they fail to establish momentum, instead opting to tread water at the .500-mark in the win-loss column. The past four games have provided no relief. After a stellar win in Pittsburgh, the team followed it up with a completely deflated effort against the Panthers. They seemed to rebound with a come-from-behind victory over the Jets, but any thoughts of a winning streak quickly vanished as they failed to deliver against the Maple Leafs. This time, Paul Holmgren had seen enough. His (first?) response was swift, yesterday sending a conditional …

Atlantic Watch: Gagne Returns, Pens and Rangers Deal With Injuries, Devils and Islanders Endure Goaltending Woes

The Philadelphia Flyers won a pair of exciting contests this week, but they also lost two games where they could have easily grabbed points. With the return of a familiar face, the Orange and the Black look to reach .500 with two tilts against teams below them in the standings and a matinee against a Northeast Division foe. The Flyers started their week, and concluded their road trip, with an exciting 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center. Jakub Voracek put the game-winner past Tomas Vokoun with 1:31 left in regulation to complete his hat trick, …

Homer, Gagne talk about busy Tuesday

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Flyers GM Paul Holmgren Will Gagne make the team better? PH:  “He improves our depth up front automatically. Obviously with the injury bug and Matt Read being out and now we lost Tye McGinn last night for a few weeks. We have some holes.  Simon is a guy who has a lot of experience and played in a lot of positions, penalty kill, power play and regular shifts.  He is a good two way player that can skate.   We think he will add to us a lot.” What’s wrong with Tye? PH:  “He has a …

Future Flyers Report: Zolnierczyk and Gustafsson in the NHL

During the 2011-2012 campaign, the tandem of Harry Zolnierczyk and Erik Gustafsson saw their fair share of action with the Philadelphia Flyers. The pair, who are both in the top six for points with the Adirondack Phantoms this season, each played a game for the Orange and Black over the last several days, as the two participated in at least 30 contests last season. Zolnierczyk suited up for the Flyers in their 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at the MTS Centre on Tuesday. Harry Z had two shots on net, two hits, and two blocked shots in 9:50 TOI, as …
