A Look Back at the Chris Pronger Trade

It was June 26, 2009. I was sitting in a Chinese buffet at the Plymouth Meeting Mall as my phone began to vibrate: CSN ALERT: Flyers trade F Joffrey Lupul, D Luca Sbisa, 2009 1st round pick, 2010 1st round pick, and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011 to Anaheim for D Chris Pronger and F Ryan Dingle. Immediately, I jumped up and exclaimed, “THE FLYERS GOT RYAN DINGLE!” Of course I began getting in touch with family members and hockey friends — not to discuss the bounty the Flyers gave up to trade for the All-star, …

Flight Plan 12.11.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers have now won five games in a row and are sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points and 101 goals scored, being the first team in the NHL to reach 100 goals this season. Peter Laviolette’s club has overcome a lot of criticism and adversity through these first 28 games to get to this point, but they may have to push forward without two more of their best players in Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov. Giroux is currently leading the NHL in scoring with 39 points, three points ahead of resurgent Toronto Maple Leafs winger …

Flight Plan Week of 11.13.2011

Instead, think about how the Flyers are now in third place in the Atlantic Division, below both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers, all because they stopped pressing in a game where they clung to a 1-0 lead through a good portion of the game and …

RICE & MICE: To play or not to play?

Throughout the NHL season, there is always pressure for players to play with injury. Sure players can be called “tough” for battling through injury, but is it worth it?  I’m not going to harp on players that play through injury and say how bad it is, but there are certain innate risks with pushing through injury. Injuries come with the territory of being an athlete.  No matter how fit, no matter how skilled or mentally tough an athlete is, injuries will happen. The ultimate dilemma is never whether or not an injury will occur; the dilemma usually occurs on the …
