Coaching Adjustments: Generating more offense

When the 2013 season came to a close, many focused on the defense and goaltending as the primary cause of the Flyers poor performance. With a forward-heavy depth chart, this is somewhat expected – right? The thing is, when the going got tough, the team struggled in pretty much all aspects of play; and if the defense was bad, the offense was atrocious. They fell out of contention when they posted a 5-6-2 record in the month of March with stretch of lackluster play that was brought on for a number of reasons, but it’s the offensive statistics were particularly …

Coaching adjustments: Pay attention to the point

Early on in the season, the Philadelphia Flyers found themselves in some trouble. Their slow start has been well documented at this point, but it is all too easy to forget how close they seemed to come to turning it around before the wheels came off for good. By the 11th of February, they had already completed over 25 percent of their regular season schedule, finding themselves below .500; but they had finally started to find their way into the win column. With seven of a possible eight points over a four-game stretch, the team traveled to Toronto with every …

2013 Year In Review: Matt Read

Matt Read came to Philadelphia as a 25-year old undrafted rookie from tiny Bemidji State University. At training camp, the small forward (all five-foot-ten, 185 pounds) began turning heads immediately, and rumors swirled that he would make the team for the 2011-2012 season. He did in fact make the Flyers, and registered 24 goals and 23 assists for 57 points. Those 24 goals were league leading amongst rookies, but he wasn’t even nominated for a Calder Trophy. Read entered his second professional season with the Flyers with the risk of a “sophomore slump” and worry that his late development would …

2013 Year in Review: Wayne Simmonds

While the Philadelphia Flyers may have suffered through a down year as a team, there are several individual players on the roster that should look back on this season and hold their heads high. One of those players is Wayne Simmonds, who is quickly becoming one of the more reliable scoring threats in Philadelphia. Heading into the season, expectations were high for ‘Simmer’ after a successful transition from the Pacific to Atlantic division last year. Before he could embark on his second season in Philadelphia under the final year of his contract, Simmonds was signed to a six-year extension that …

Then and Now: Denis Gauthier

The 2013 Eastern Conference Finals will put the Boston Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wade Redden will try and help Boston’s blue line slow down Pittsburgh’s offensive crew, which includes former Calgary Flame Jarome Iginla. Both Redden and Iginla were picked in the first round of the 1995 NHL Draft, as Redden went second overall behind Bryan Berard and Iginla went 11th overall to the Dallas Stars. Nine picks after Iginla the Calgary Flames picked Denis Gauthier. After being named to the QMJHL All-Star team and winning the Emile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy for QMJHL’s best defenseman in 1995-1996, Gauthier went …
