Flyers Blanked in New Jersey

The Philadelphia Flyers lost their third straight game tonight in a goalless, penalty-filled 3-0 effort to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Martin Brodeur recorded a 24-save shutout, while Travis Zajac provided the game-winning goal just over a minute into the contest. David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for Jersey in the win, as the Flyers’ special teams hurt them yet again early in the 2013 campaign. Not only did the Flyers’ power play go 0-for-6, they allowed a goal against while on the man advantage due to a short-handed penalty shot tally from Kovalchuk early in …

The tandem of Scott Laughton, who enjoyed his first two games in the NHL, and Eric Wellwood, who registered at least one game played for the Flyers in each of the last three seasons, went pointless in the Flyers’ losses on Saturday and Sunday, but they did provide some noticeable performances. Laughton, who was picked 20th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, was somewhat of a surprise to make the Flyers’ roster. However, …

Vanek and Flyers’ Penalty Kill Hand Philly Second Straight Loss

The Philadelphia Flyers suffered their second loss in 48 hours with a 5-2 defeat in Buffalo on Sunday afternoon. Thomas Vanek accrued five points on two goals and three assists in the Sabres’ first game of the 2013 season.  Tyler Myers registered the game-winning goal in the third period, and Ryan Miller stopped 27-of-29 shots. For the second straight start, you couldn’t blame Ilya Bryzgalov, as he denied 36 of Buffalo’s 40 shots on net. Both Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers in a loss that drops them to 0-2-0 in this shortened season. With the game tied …

Taking Stock: Offense

There were many things to hate about the lockout. One hundred and thirteen days later, the rest of the hockey world attuned only to the National Hockey League was suddenly asked to move along as if nothing happened, and pick up where it left off. Wait; where did it leave off? With the lockout dominating the conversation for so long, it is difficult to even remember what faces will be occupying the bench come January 19. Now training camp (you know, that one practice) is around the corner, and all eyes will be on the ice. The question is: what …
