Phantoms: New Home, New Hope – The Voice From Above, Dan Miner

I have been associated with the Glens Falls Civic Center in several different aspects, from inputting online stats during the Frostbite era, to operating the message board, and now writer for Flyers Faithful covering the Phantoms. During all my stints, there was one constant: The voice from above, Dan Miner, PA Announcer. Not only is Dan a terrific on-air talent, but he is a passionate, hockey smart and kind individual who welcomed me into the press box very quickly. Since then, Dan and I have become friends and with the addition of Gary “The Music Man” Gifford, we have been …

Three More Assigned to Phantoms Camp

(Photo courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers) The Flyers announced that three players have cleared waivers and were assisted to the American Hockey League Phantoms, where training camp is scheduled to begin Monday. The three players were forwards Ben Holmstrom and Kris Newbury, and goaltender Yann Danis. Defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon also cleared waivers, but instead of heading to Adirondack, is expected to be placed on long-term injury reserve as he tries to battle back from nagging concussion issues. An impressive group of young players will take the ice tomorrow in Glens Falls, NY, including recent signee Petr Straka, Nick Cousins, Kyle …

Frequent Flyer Miles: Hedberg released by Rangers, Nodl released from NLA club, Hlavac to Kladno

As the beginning of the NHL season nears, several former Philadelphia Flyers, draft picks of the team, and former members of the organization were involved in transactions this week. The biggest news might be the New York Rangers releasing Johan Hedberg, who was with the team on a Professional Try-Out. Hedberg, who was selected 218th overall by the Flyers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, has spent the last three seasons with the New Jersey Devils. Two former Flyers were involved in moves this week, as Andreas Nodl was released by his NLA team and Jan Hlavac will join HC …

Their longest-lasting (and most successful) affiliation was with the Hershey Bears from 1984-1996, prior to dealing with the Phantoms. When the Flyers moved out of the Spectrum and into the CoreStates Center in September of ‘96, they elected to keep the Spectrum open. Doing so required them to find another tenant to replace all the games lost with the Flyers’ move, and so they made a move and purchased the Phantoms, an expansion team scheduled to begin operation in the 1996-1997 season. And thus began the longtime relationship …

Frequent Flyer Miles: Camp Movement, Hedberg trying out with Rangers, Pitkanen out for 2013-2014

Several of the moves involving former Philadelphia Flyers and Flyers’ draft picks this week relate to NHL training camps taking shape. In addition to a Professional Try-Out for Hal Gill, the drama surrounding Daniel Cleary, and an entry-level contract handed out to Taylor Leier, a pair of goaltenders once linked to the Orange and Black are involved with other NHL clubs. One netminder is Johan Hedberg, who was invited to the New York Rangers training camp on a Professional Try-Out. With Martin Biron, yet another former Flyers’ goalie, out of camp due to personal reasons, Hedberg will join the Blueshirts and try …
