Devils’ Whitney continues to punish Phantoms

It was a case of deja vu for the Phantoms as Albany Devils left winger, Joe Whitney, scored two goals for the second time in one week resulting in a Devils 4-1 victory over the Phantoms at the Glens Falls Civic Center in front of 4,633 fans. Whitney’s pair combined with goals from Matt Anderson and Darcy Zajac gave the Devils (16-14-9) an easy win as Keith Kinkaid made 26 saves. Knuble redux; Lilja back from AHL

What started out as “whispers” became a source-confirmed bit of news during the first period of last night’s Flyers-Rangers game, which in turn became official on Friday afternoon. Mike Knuble will make his return to Philadelphia after an absence of three-plus seasons after passing a physical. It is a one-year deal reported to be worth $750,000. “Obviously we’re familiar with Mike,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said on Thursday night. “He’s a good guy, big, heavy player and we think he’s a good guy to throw in the mix right now…with the injuries we have.” Knuble had been plying his trade …

During the opening weekend of the NHL season, a pair of prospects joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster in the team’s first two games of the 2013 campaign. The tandem of Scott Laughton, who enjoyed his first two games in the NHL, and Eric Wellwood, who registered at least one game played for the Flyers in each of the last three seasons, went pointless in the Flyers’ losses on Saturday and Sunday, but they did provide some noticeable performances. The Trenton Titans’ losing streak reached seven games before they pulled off an overtime winner on Wednesday morning against the Reading Royals. The Philadelphia Flyers’ affiliate only grabbed one point over the 0-6-1 stretch, as their last two wins have come in overtime against the Royals at Sun National Bank Center.
