Future Flyers Report: 11/19

Derek Mathers is one of the tougher prospects in the Philadelphia Flyers’ system. With 47 penalty minutes in 24 games, Mathers is currently 14th in the Ontario Hockey League in time spent in the sin bin. He’s engaged in three fights so far this season and he’s won two of them in convincing fashion. In a Peterborough Petes’ 5-1 loss to the Oshawa Generals, Mathers took out his frustration on Scott Sabourin in the Flyers’ prospect’s first fight of the 2012-2013 regular season. After he fought the Owen Sound Attack’s Daniel Zweep in an even bout in Peterborough’s 5-4 shootout loss …

Trenton Update: 11/9-11/15

In a schedule quirk, the Trenton Titans’ last five games have all come against the Reading Royals. The Titans lost every single one of those contests and are currently on a six-game losing streak, as they have gained only one point in the process. Three of Trenton’s losses to the Royals came this past weekend, as the club was minutes away from ending their losing streak. After coming up short in both of the clubs’ meetings last week, the Titans dropped last Friday’s meeting in a 2-1 affair at the Sun National Bank Center. Bryan Haczyk leveled the game at one with his third …

Phantoms logo

Let’s talk about Allentown. Really, it’s OK.

The Phantoms made a major announcement Wednesday afternoon about the future of their franchise. Once they move to Allentown at the start of the 2014-15 season, they’ll be known as the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. There’s a new logo, some tweaked colors, and of course, merchandise for sale. Wait, you missed the big hullabaloo? Me too. As far as I can tell, the news release went out to an Allentown-specific media list that bypassed the usual sources to disseminate information. I find no mention on the team’s official Twitter or Facebook or web pages, and none of the reporters I checked …

On this edition of the Flyers Faithful podcast, Steve and Hal discuss how they’ve been filling their time during the NHL Lockout, the Flyers Faithful crew’s Movember efforts, Ilya Bryzgalov’s continuing to act like Ilya Bryzgalov in the KHL, and the struggles of the Adirondack Phantoms that aren’t named Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier. Future Flyers Report: 11/12

The Flyers used two of their seven draft picks in this year’s draft on forwards. The first was center Scott Laughton, who they selected in the first round at 20th overall. The second was Taylor Leier, the only winger selected by Philly in the draft, in the fourth round at 117th overall. Although Laughton plays with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL and Leier plays in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, both skaters have participated in the same number of games due to Laughton in the midst of a 10-game suspension. With 14 games apiece, Leier has produced 14 …

Positive Vibes

I apologize for my absence last week. Hurricane Sandy left my house powerless for a few days, and I know many of us had far greater things to worry about than the sport of hockey. I hope everyone made out safely and securely, and wish nothing but the best to those who may have been affected by the tragedy that struck our Northeast community. – The NHL and NHLPA met for almost a full working day yesterday. They are also doing so today. After canceling the crown jewel of the NHL regular season in the Winter Classic, it’s about time there were …

Future Flyers Report: 11/5

Despite a cloud of suspicion for his late Summer activities, Nick Cousins leads all Philadelphia Flyers prospects in scoring so far this season. The fact he has played more games than any other forward on the list shouldn’t take away from what he has done to this point. Not only does he lead his team — the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds — in points, which is currently a margin of 10 over right winger Sergey Tolchinsky, Cousins sits seventh overall in the Ontario Hockey League with 27 points over 18 games. The center has registered at least one point in 15 different contests this …

A look at the Phantoms so far

When it comes to the Phantoms and winning hockey games, my relationship is a bit like a dog who’s been smacked in the nose with a newspaper too many times. One day the owner innocently lifts the sports section — people still do this, right? — and I dive under the kitchen table. So I as watched the updates stream in during the latter stages of their game Sunday at Syracuse, forgive me for thinking, ‘Here we go again.’ ” The Phantoms were dangerously close to losing three straight games on the weekend and falling to 2-5 overall. To their …
