Late last night, the report from Bob McKenzie from TSN of Canada was that the Flyers signed free agent forward Kyle Flanagan from St. Lawrence to an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of this season and a one-year deal for 2013-14. He is expected to report to Adirondack of the AHL by Friday at the latest. Flanagan, a native of the university town of Canton, New York, finished his senior season with 15 goals and 47 points in 32 games. The playoffs for both the OHL and the WHL start this weekend, as four of the five teams in the two leagues that feature Philadelphia Flyers’ prospects advanced to the postseason. In the OHL, the Oshawa Generals and the London Knights will have home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, while the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will be on the road to start the 2013 OHL postseason. With all 20 of the teams in the OHL having played 64 or more of their 68 regular season games, the playoff picture is practically set. It was like someone turned on a light switch late in the third period, as the Adirondack Phantoms scored 3 goals in the last 5:52 of the game to defeat the Connecticut Whale by a score of 4-3 in front of the 4,205 in attendance at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Philadelphia Flyers signed a pair of Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to entry-level contracts this week. One of those was expected, as goaltending prospect Anthony Stolarz inked a deal. The other signing wasn’t, as forward Brandon Alderson also joined the organization. Stolarz continues to impress in the OHL with the London Knights. Michael Leighton made his Adirondack season debut Sunday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center with a 25-save performance, only to see the rest of his Phantoms teammates fall short in a loss to the Albany Devils by a score of 3-2. Jeff Frazee put on a stellar performance for the Devils (24-19-11) with 36 saves, and Phil DeSimone scored twice including the deciding tally before the nine-minute mark of the third. The Philadelphia Flyers were a busy organization on Friday. First, they announced the signings of free agent winger Brandon Alderson and goaltender Anthony Stolarz to entry-level contracts. In 59 games played with the Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, Alderson has totaled 25 goals 32 assists for 57 points. Blake Kessel is regarded as one of the better defenseman on the Trenton Titans. At 6’2″, 203 pounds, Kessel does a great job in his own end of the rink and can pitch in offensively as well. In his final two years at the University of New Hampshire and his time with the Adirondack Phantoms last season, Kessel posted a total of 16 goals and 67 assists in 133 games.
