Then and Now: Randy Robitaille

After a 40-point campaign with the Minnesota Wild in 2005-2006, Randy Robitaille joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization in the summer of 2006. The now 37-year-old forward played all of 28 games with the Orange and Black before being dealt to a divisional rival. In his 28 games with Philly, Robitaille totaled five goals and 12 helpers. His first goal with the Flyers came against Johan Hedberg in a 3-2 shootout win over the Atlanta Thrashers on October 26th, 2006. There are a limited number of ways that a team is able to get out of a contract given to one of their players. One such way is to buy  out the contract, which relieves of the team of their contractual obligation to the player, but does still result in “dead cap space” which is essentially cap space being used on a player that isn’t with the club.
