Point/Counterpoint: What to expect when you’re expecting a 48-game season

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Nick D. and Bob H. renew their Laurel and Hardy act, trading barbs on what exactly fans will see once the NHL agrees to a fixed number of games to complete the truncated 2012-13 season. Point, Nick: Nail-biting white-knuckling, heart-attack-inducing intensity. Every game, every minute, every point will be huge. Anything can happen. Basically what you can expect is all around great hockey every single night and since it is NHL …

Phantoms announce additional season in Glens Falls

Due to the delays in constructing the new Allentown, PA arena, the Phantoms were virtually homeless for the 2013-14 season. That changed today when the Phantoms and the city of Glens Falls made a joint announcement that they have come to an agreement for the Phantoms to play one more season at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Despite the fans being loyal to what ever team is playing in Glens Falls at the time, there was immediate concern that another season of Phantoms hockey would impede the search for another team. The co-owners of the Phantoms, Rob and Jim Brooks, …

Homer’s Do’s and Doh’s Final: Carter Trade v. Gagne Trade

Paul Holmgren became the interim General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006. That interim title was removed only weeks later on November 11. Holmgren was able to take a team that finished last in the National Hockey League, and rebuild it to make a deep run all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals the very next season. Yes, some of Holmgren’s moves have been amazing, but he’s also a guy who has gotten this organization into some hot water with the salary cap and was forced to make deals that were head scratchers to say the least. If you enjoyed …

Inside Providence: 2013 AHL All-Star Game slotted for Rhode Island

Surely putting out the call to “Dunph,” “Drugs,” “Mousey,” Bunny Cote and other hockey-crazed New Englanders of all ages, the American Hockey League selected Providence, Rhode Island, as the host for the 2013 All-Star Classic on Wednesday. “The American Hockey League is excited to be returning to one of its founding cities for the 2013 All-Star Classic,” said AHL president and CEO David Andrews. “Providence has been part of the fabric of our league since our first season in 1936, and the Providence Bruins organization has been a cornerstone for the last two decades. We’re looking forward to showcasing our …

The AHL All-Star Game is decadent and depraved, Part I

Way back last year when it was announced that the 2012 American Hockey League All-Star Weekend festivities would take place in Boardwalk Hall at Atlantic City, I cringed. After all, why would any business want to bring that violent brand of sporting event — birthed in Canada of all places — to America’s family entertainment showcase? Why introduce that certain “element” in the name of restless travelers and ravenous fans of that infamous “sport” from all over North America, mind you, and let it loose amongst the fine restaurants, friendly outlet stores and sandy beaches the town provides? But the …
