Both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres entered tonight’s game at the Wells Fargo Center on three-game losing streaks, but the hosts were able to grab a 3-2 victory to end their skid. Claude Giroux had the game-winning goal just 17 seconds into the second period and Kimmo Timonen had two helpers in the win, while Ilya Bryzgalov had 17 stops for the decision. The KHL playoffs start today, as 16 of the league’s 26 clubs compete for the Gagarin Cup. Since the NHL and KHL are huge competitors, it’s interesting to look at the players on the current KHL playoff teams to see just how many are former Philadelphia Flyers or NHLers. On top of that, some clubs’ prospects are in the 16-team field. In the 2001 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers picked Swedish defenseman David Printz 225th overall in the seventh round. The blue liner was selected two picks before the Colorado Avalanche chose Marek Svatos and four picks before the New Jersey Devils chose Aaron Voros. Printz joined the Flyers’ organization in the 2004-2005 regular season, as he spent time with the Trenton Titans and the Philadelphia Phantoms. The d-man only played in two games for the Titans recording an assist in the process. Providing his third game-winning goal in as many games for Philadelphia, Claude Giroux put home his 16th goal of the season just past the midway point of overtime to hand the Flyers a 5-4 win in Buffalo to cap a rousing contest Wednesday. Despite racking up an early three-goal lead and chasing Ryan Miller in the process, the Flyers saw all but one of those early scores go to waste, holding on to beat the Sabres 3-2 tonight in Buffalo. With the exception of two unlucky bounces, Ilya Bryzgalov provided another stellar performance by making 29 saves, while ex-Flyer Ville Leino had no points in his first game against Philly since departing as a free agent. After a big win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flyers dropped a bad one to the Montreal Canadiens where they looked all sorts of out of sorts against a team who was desperate for a win. Six first period goals, 54 penalty minutes, and one goalie change were all elements of the Flyers’ 5-4 win in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup with the Sabres. Brian Boucher made 20 saves on 21 shots in a relief appearance for Sergei Bobrovsky as five different Flyers scored to tie the series at one. The Flyers lost their third consecutive game on Saturday when the visiting Sabres won 5-3. Three goals in a span of three minutes and forty seconds in the second period turned a two-goal Flyers lead into a one-goal deficit. Jason Pominville put away the game-winner six minutes and thirty-seven seconds into the final period. The loss drops Philly to 40-18-6 on the season. The Philadelphia Flyers won all three of their games this past week, although two of them were against the New Jersey Devils and those four points were about as easy as they come for this team. The Flyers’ impressive win over the bruised and battered Detroit Red wings however, was a classic example of Peter Laviolette’s up-tempo left-wing lock system. The Flyers were constantly getting the puck deep through two periods of play and were relentless on the forecheck, out hitting and outshooting the Red Wings 22-18 and 32-27 respectively.
