Atlantic Watch: Gagne Returns, Pens and Rangers Deal With Injuries, Devils and Islanders Endure Goaltending Woes

The Philadelphia Flyers won a pair of exciting contests this week, but they also lost two games where they could have easily grabbed points. With the return of a familiar face, the Orange and the Black look to reach .500 with two tilts against teams below them in the standings and a matinee against a Northeast Division foe. The Flyers started their week, and concluded their road trip, with an exciting 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center. Jakub Voracek put the game-winner past Tomas Vokoun with 1:31 left in regulation to complete his hat trick, …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers Respond to Giroux, Penguins’ Three-Game Winning Streak, Rangers and Islanders Deal With Injuries

Although the Philadelphia Flyers lost two of their three games this week, the Orange and Black finished the week with a resounding 7-0 victory over a divisional opponent. Philly will look to gain ground in the Eastern Conference this week with four games over the next seven days, one of which is against the Pittsburgh Penguins and another two against a pair of the teams at the bottom of the standings. The Flyers started the week with a 5-3 defeat on Friday to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Travis Zajac opened the scoring with his third of …

Atlantic Watch: Devils top the East, Rangers on winning streak, Islanders on losing streak

The Philadelphia Flyers were able to extend their point streak to four games this week, as they earned a shootout loss to the Florida Panthers and an overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Although they were dominated in Toronto, the Orange and Black did a good job of rebounding to earn their second road win of the year last night in Winnipeg. The Flyers continue their road trip with three of their six games away from the Wells Fargo Center coming in the next seven days. Philadelphia had a lead after 40 minutes on Thursday, but they only came away …

Rangers Score Four In First Period, Sweep Flyers With 5-3 Win

A four-goal first period for the New York Rangers helped them hold on for a 5-3 win over the Flyers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. Five different players scored for New York, while Henrik Lundqvist picked up his career-best 39th win of the season — six of them coming at the expense of the Orange and Black. “The last 15 minutes of the first period wasn’t good at all,” Kimmo Timonen said. “A couple of bad breakdowns in the defensive end. The start wasn’t that bad.” Ryan McDonagh, Brian Boyle, Artem Anisimov lit the lamp in the opening 20 …

Flyers Continue To Struggle Against Rangers, Lose 5-2

The Flyers are still looking for their first win against the New York Rangers this season, as they dropped their visit to Madison Square Garden today 5-2. Artem Anisimov recorded a goal and two assists for his first three-point game of the season, as Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves in the violent victory. The Rangers played strong defensively in a game that featured a lot of animosity and intensity. The Rangers blocked 25 of the Flyers’ shots today, while four fights happened in a game that featured 54 hits. On the game-winning goal, Michael Del Zotto skated into the slot and received a …

Atlantic Watch: 1/25-1/31

In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. This time, however, the game was very defensive, as the Jets picked up a 2-1 shootout win in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Chris …

Atlantic Watch: 1/4-1/10

The Flyers won three of their four games this week, as all three wins came in one-goal games. In the Flyers’ last three games, they have received no help from the line of Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, and Jaromir Jagr as all three players are pointless since the Flyers’ win on Thursday. The line will look to find their groove again as the Flyers complete their four-game road trip this week before returning home for a game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.  In their first match-up in Philadelphia since Game six of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, the Flyers beat …

Atlantic Watch: 12/21-12/27

For the first time since the middle of November, the Flyers went a week where they only earned two points as they went 1-2-0 in three road games. Although the Flyers had the help of Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn returning to the line-up, they managed to end the week with a pair of losses as they fell out of the top position in the division. The highlight of the Flyers’ upcoming schedule is The Winter Classic on Monday against the New York Rangers. After missing the previous four games, Giroux returned to the line-up last Wednesday to lead the Flyers …

Lundqvist Leads Rangers To Victory In Jagr’s Return To MSG

Displaying his second strong performance in as many games against the Flyers this season, Henrik Lundqvist led the Rangers to a 4-2 win on Friday, making 28 saves in the process. Marian Gaborik scored the game-winner very early in the third period as both Stu Bickel and Michael Del Zotto had two-assist games. Ilya Bryzgalov made 20 saves on 24 Rangers’ shots but was victimized by two unlucky bounces, while Jaromir Jagr failed to record a point in his first game back at Madison Square Garden since joining the Flyers in the off-season. As expected, this game between the two …

Atlantic Watch: 12/14-12/20

The last two games for the Flyers haven’t been pretty, but there is good news related to the team’s point-leader. Claude Giroux is expected to make a return in the near future, the earliest being tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars, from his concussion. This is good news considering the status of Chris Pronger, who will not take part in another game at any point this season or for the playoffs. With his team going 2-2-0 in his absence, Giroux’s return will hopefully turn things around for the Orange and Black. As for Philly’s games this week, the Flyers extended their winning …
