Hockey Hilarity: Luongo vs. Schneider

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! As not too much has been funny in Philadelphia Flyers land lately, we’ve had to go to Canada, yes all the way to Canada, to find something for you fine people to laugh at for this week’s Hockey Hilarity. TSN put together this absolutely amazing video starring none other than the Vancouver Canucks‘ goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider, as well as TSN sportscaster James Duthie. As everyone …

Assembling a Stanley Cup winner; breaking down the last seven Cup teams

It’s no secret that after losing the 2004-2005 NHL season due to a lockout, the dynamic of assembling an NHL team changed dramatically. With the implementation of a salary cap, there were a myriad of new limitations and restrictions placed on teams and how they spend their money. Rich teams could no longer try to buy themselves a Stanley Cup, while poor teams felt like they could finally compete. But is there a formula for building a Stanley Cup winning team? When you have no restrictions on how much money you can spend, there’s really limited concern about spending wisely. …

Flyers West Update: Journey to Cup Finals Is A Team Effort

The Los Angeles Kings have had a remarkable run so far in these playoffs. They’ve knocked off the top three seeded teams in the West and have earned a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. They’ve won all eight games on the road during the playoffs, and went 12-2 overall. And they did it all as a team. You might be saying to yourself, “Well, duh.” It’s true that sometimes, one player or one part of the team carries the rest on their back. An outstanding goalie can make up for a lackluster offense, or a group of high-scoring forwards …

Atlantic Watch: 11/2-11/8

The Flyers may have absolutely clobbered the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, and the Flyers may have only been a shootout goal or two away from going 3-0-0 this week, but these three games weren’t the best Flyers team we’ve seen all season. Before their Saturday night massacre against the worst team in the league, the Flyers may have played 125 minutes as well as participate in a shootout in their first two games, but they really only showed up for a total of about 20 minutes. Inability to play a full 60 minutes was a problem last year’s Flyers …

Kings Shut Out Flyers 1-0

The Flyers learned the hard way on Sunday afternoon that more chances don’t always lead to more goals as the Kings beat the Flyers 1-0, behind 40 saves from Jonathan Quick. Drew Doughty had the only goal of the game scoring before the twenty-second mark of the second period. The Orange and Black outworked and outplayed the Kings the entire game, but their inability to put at least one shot past Quick results in the loss, the fifth time the Eastern leaders have been blanked this year. Within the first minute of the game, the Flyers were already dictating play. Early pressure from …

Flight Plan week of 02.06.2011

Consistent. If you’re a Philadelphia Flyers fan, over the past four years, you have never seen that word associated with the team you love. “Up and down” or “streaky” or “just plain bad” at times “unbelievably good” at times, but never were any of the teams over the past four years “consistent”. This team is the definition of consistent. They don’t win too many games in a row, they don’t lose too many games in a row, but they consistently show up and consistently get their points and that’s why they have the most wins of any team in the …

Flight Plan week of 12.26.2010

‘Tis the season for road trips as the Flyers head out west on their annual post-Christmas visit to the other conference and try to regain the top spot in the NHL after losing it to Pittsburgh as they remained idle during the Penguins’ last two games. The Penguins hold just a one point lead over the Flyers and the Fly guys have two games in hand as they’ve played 35 to Pittsburgh’s 37.  The Flyers obviously would love to forget what happened a week ago at home, but alas, they would do well not to as they got smoked in …
