The Phantoms player I’m most interested to follow during the lockout may surprise you

In three seasons covering the Adirondack Phantoms, only two players made me stop and say, “Wow.” Brayden Schenn and Matt Read belonged in a different league from their first shifts. Instead of rookies, they looked like 16-year-olds with forged birth certificates who faked their way into some 13-and-under house league. They were the only sure things. And you didn’t need to be a hockey genius to see it. If you asked me, however, who was the third most impressive forward I covered, I bet you’d be surprised by the answer. This time last year, Matt Ford was a third-liner for the …

The Downside of the “Big” Guys Playing for the “Small” Club

As the chances of the lockout coming to an end anytime soon get smaller and smaller, NHL players are flocking to other teams left and right. Some are going overseas to play in European leagues, while others have the opportunity to play for their team’s AHL affiliate, such as a few of the Flyers. I touched briefly on the downside of having NHL players joining other teams abroad in last week’s Point/Counterpoint, but now I’m going to focus on the effect it may have on players in the minors. The AHL is a stepping stone, the last stop before a …

Barry Goers, playing for the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL.

Going, Going, Goers

It’s the kind of story sports fans love: local boy does good — even if he isn’t “doing good” locally anymore. Barry Goers grew up in the Philadelphia area and played hockey for both Council Rock High School North and the Junior Flyers. He’d often take the train into the city after school and meet his father to attend Flyers games. On nights when they didn’t see a live game, they were more often than not, watching them on TV. “Most nights, I would watch the games on TV and my dad would always tell me to watch certain players, …

Bruise or Bust – Filling out the Forwards

When cross-referencing the Flyers official roster on their website with Capgeek’s breakdown it looks like there are six forwards that will be vying for the final 2 spots within the 12-man forward committee. So who would you like to see filling out the bottom of the bench to provide the occasional spark for your team (assuming there is a season)? Let’s take a look at some of the candidates. The list (by alphabetical short name order – how weird is that?): Ben Holmstrom, Tom Sestito, Zac Rinaldo, Eric Wellwood, Jody Shelley, Harry Zolnierczyk Ben Holmstrom: 7 NHL GP (over 2 …

Is Holmstrom ready for the big time?

Despite the fact that the revamped Flyers team of last season didn’t make it past the second round of the playoffs, they found success elsewhere — namely, the development of defensive prowess of a few of their forwards, such as Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, and Max Talbot. It’s no secret that the Flyers’ biggest concern right now is their depleted blue line, which is not expected to be nearly as skilled and effective as it was at the start of last season. But with some defensive-minded forwards up front, perhaps the need to improve the back end isn’t that necessary, …

Flyers System Inventory: Forwards

Last week we took an in depth look at the defensemen on the farm.  This week we’ll be taking a look at the forwards. AHL/ECHL Jason Akeson, Right Wing,  22, signed as free agent in 2011. 2011-2012:  76gp  14g  41a  55pts Akeson proved he could handle the jump to the American Hockey League after an outstanding performance as an overaged talent in juniors. He had a solid debut in the AHL for a rookie, but his NHL Equivalency  for his performance last season is 26 points over a full season which is an average third line talent in the National …

Flyers Faithful’s 10 top Flyers prospects

I’ve decided to take a more traditional look  prospects this year instead of grading them with the help of NHLE because goalies and defenders are undervalued with NHLE. I decided to evaluate them mainly on three criteria: 1) NHL ceiling 2) Likelihood of reaching ceiling 3) Proximity to NHL “NHL ceiling” is essentially a prospect’s maximum potential, but not everyone reaches their ceiling. I tend to prefer younger, higher ceiling prospects, but it’s important to factor in whether they are likely to reach that ceiling or not. So a player with a low ceiling — but a higher potential — …

Minor League Update: 4/9-4/16

The Adirondack Phantoms finished 10th in the Eastern Conference for the 2011-2012 regular season, as the club missed a playoff berth by five points. As they headed into the final week of the campaign with an outside chance to make the postseason, the Phantoms dropped two of their final three tilts to miss an opportunity to win the Calder Cup. On Friday night, the Phantoms traveled to the MassMutual Center and lost 4-2 to the Springfield Falcons (Columbus Blue Jackets). Wade MacLeod potted two goals in the midst of the Falcons’ three-goal third period including the game-winner at the 12:33 …

Minor League Update: 3/26-4/1

With six games remaining in their schedule, the Phantoms did enough this week to stay within striking distance of the eigth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Four points behind the Manchester Monarchs (Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate) with a game in hand, Adirondack has a chance to gain the final spot for the postseason, which will surely result in being swept by the Norfolk Admirals (Tampa Bay Lightning’s AHL affiliate). Since they play a total of three games this week against two teams currently out of the playoff scenario, the Phantoms can easily gain ground towards a …
