The Orange and Black List: Bernie Parent’s life as an FBI consultant

When men sign up to play goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers, they take on a certain risk. The risk of losing their mind. Few escape unscathed. Flyers great Bernie Parent helps the FBI round these men up and finds them the help that they need.   BERNIE PARENT pulls up to FBI Headquarters in PHILADELPHIA, PA. He steps out of his shiny, black Porsche and assesses the building. He is met by young agent REBECCA BAKER.   BERNIE Well well well, who is this?   BAKER Special Agent Baker. Thanks for coming in today, Bernie.   BERNIE Oh believe me, …

Flyers Hockey: The Organization

Ask anyone who is affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers, and they will tell you that the organization is good to its players, both current and former. For proof, look no further than the team’s front office. Bobby Clarke, the longtime face of the organization while a player, is the team’s Senior Vice President. Dave Brown and Derian Hatcher both hold player personnel positions, while Craig Berube is an assistant coach. Goalie: Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) We will start out in net with the most impressive player on the ice for the USNTDP Under-18. Demko is still a junior in high school, but is so talented and “mature beyond his years” as Coach Don Granato puts it, that he is in an accelerated program to earn the required high school credits before heading to Chestnut Hill. It says something about the …

Book Review: Jakki Clarke’s “Flyer Lives”

“As a player takes a trip down memory lane, so does the reader.” That is how author Jakki Clarke describes her new book, Flyer Lives, featuring stories drawn from interviews with various Flyers alumni and current players. Whether you’ve been a Flyers fan from the beginning or have just recently joined the fandom, you’ll love this collection of personal tales from some of your favorite Philadelphia athletes. The idea for Flyer Lives came to be as Philadelphia prepared for the 2012 Winter Classic. Clarke wanted to speak to several players about what it meant to them to be playing in …
