The Flyers currently have a logjam on offense and will likely look to shed both a contract and salary in the near future. As a result, Scott Hartnell’s name has once again popped up as a possible trade candidate. Should he be on the block, though? First of all, let’s state the obvious: Nobody is untouchable and, if the return is good enough, anyone could be traded. Let’s take a look at the positives and negatives of trading Hartnell. The Good Hartnell is the second-highest paid forward behind only Daniel Briere. The Flyers could alleviate a lot of cap headaches …

Ranking the Flyers top 20 prospects using NHLE
Last year, I wrote about a method of evaluating prospects using NHL Equivalencies or NHLE. NHLE allows us to figure out the NHL equivalent of prospect’s performance outside of the NHL. This enables us to better compare prospects playing in various leagues where the level of play is often quite different. I decided to come up with a prospects ranking using NHLE as my guide. Last year I simply ranked the prospects from the best NHLE to the worst, but this time I am taking into account age and league because those are big factors as well. A 20 year …
Flyers prospects make ESPN Insider’s top impact prospects
Grant Sonier, a former NHL scout, wrote a piece for ESPN Insider ranking the top 20 prospects most likely to have an impact for their NHL squads this season. The Flyers Matt Read and Sean Couturier made the list while Brayden Schenn appears in the bonus section. The interesting this is the only team that had more prospects mentioned than the Flyers is the Ottawa Senators with four which can be seen as both as a good and bad thing. It’s good because just a year ago the Flyers had little to get excited about in their system, but some …
Five Questions: Which offseason acquisition(s) will prove to be the best for the Flyers? Which will be the worst?
Flyers Faithful asked Dave Isaac from Philly Sports Daily, Ryan from Flyers Goal Scored By…, Anthony Mingioni from The Hockey Guys,Center Ice Philly, and Sportsology, and our very own Frick five questions about the first half of the season. We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: Which offseason acquisition(s) will prove to be the best for the Flyers? Which will be the worst? Dave Isaac: If Ilya Bryzgalov isn’t the best offseason acquisition, there’s a big problem. …
Flyers waive three, some thoughts
TSN confirms that the Flyers placed forward Blair Betts and defensemen Matt Walker and Oskars Bartulis on waivers today. Paul Holmgren confirmed that Brayden Schenn was sent to the Phantoms as well. Cap reasons aside, there’s no reason to rush Schenn. Giving him some time in the AHL where he can play more minutes per game until he completely dominates the league is a worthwhile decision for such a precious investment. It worked wonders for Claude Giroux and should do the same for Schenn. It’s a surprise to see Betts waived, as his $700k salary made him the most affordable …
Introducing Your 2011-2012 Flyers Team
The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).
Constructing a trade rumor timeline
The big rumor today was that the Flyers and Predators were working on a deal to send Scott Hartnell back to Nashville. How did this come to be? When the Flyers were originally shopping Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, Hartnell was apparently on the block too. Hartnell is the last remaining member of the Center City crew. He is overpaid and the Flyers are tight against the cap. Nobody expected Mike Richards or Jeff Carter to be traded. Now, people are more willing to believe that anything is possible. Paul Holmgren said that both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier could …
On the preseason, Shanahan, and more
The Preseason The power play has the potential to be lethal, especially once Chris Pronger and his booming shot are back on the point. When Jaromir Jagr was signed, I balked at his contract, even though I expected 60-70 points from him. Now that I see the chemistry he has with Claude Giroux and how much he can help the powerplay, $3.3 million seems reasonable. I’m willing to admit that I jumped the gun, expressing concern about the penalty killing unit when players like Mike Richards and Darroll Powe left town. I don’t expect the PK to be as good …
Thoughts on the preseason opener, brotherhood
As the Philadelphia Flyers began their 2011-12 preseason on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, it got me thinking about the close-knit nature of the sport in direct contrast to its international reach. Despite a pool of talent now stretching from Kelowna to Kazakhstan, some things never change. Skating for the Flyers, Blake Kessel and Brayden Schenn. Skating for the Leafs, Phil Kessel and Luke Schenn. Thus, a rivalry was born. Or is it? When I started watching the NHL, back in 1985, its population was almost totally homogeneous: White North Americans made up roughly 95 percent …
