Sunday funday: Who wants to play Armchair GM?

I do, of course. I mean, who doesn’t? Any dedicated fan is going to have input on how to improve his/her favorite team. It goes without saying, though, that any Armchair GM is merely expressing an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. And what better way to end a long week than by doing just that? When it comes to the makeup of the roster that comprises the current Philadelphia Flyers team, two things need to be taken into consideration: Not unlike the basement-dwelling 2007 Flyers, this team has a solid core of promising young stars that are starting to realize …

Captain Claude leads, Bryzgalov gets ShO as Flyers rout Islanders, 7-0

Claude Giroux backed up his words after the loss on Saturday, as he led the Philadelphia Flyers to an emphatic 7-0 win against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum on Monday afternoon. The captain, who ripped his teammates for their effort in the wake of listless back-to-back road losses at New Jersey and Montreal, posted two goals and an assist, while he also set the tone early with hustle and physicality. Danny Briere recorded the same stat line and Matt Read had a three-point performance with a goal and two helpers. Jakub Voracek produced a career-high four-assist game, while Ilya Bryzgalov …

Flyers should consider Troy Rutkowski: A Poor Man’s Justin Schultz

It is hard to go unnoticed when you stand 6-foot-1 and weigh 207 pounds. It is even harder when your team is largely considered the most potent threat in all of Canadian juniors. However, that’s exactly been the case for Portland Winterhawks defenseman Troy Rutkowski. Last night in Vancouver the Winterhawks’ captain played in his 225th consecutive game, extending his franchise record Iron Man streak. The victory over the Giants added one more to Rutkowski’s franchise record 336 career games. Rutkowski passed current Boston Bruin defenseman, Andrew Ference, on February 6 on home ice at the Rose Garden. The Garden …

Atlantic Watch: 1/23-1/29

The Philadelphia Flyers started the week with a pair of wins, but a pair of lackadaisical efforts led to two losses where they were outscored 7-2. The Orange and Black find themselves at the bottom of the division with a trio of meetings against Southeast Division opponents over the next seven days. With a record of 0-3-0 and playing a team they went 0-6-0 against in 2011-2012, the Flyers’ 2-1 win over the visiting New York Rangers wasn’t expected on Thursday night. After a scoreless opening stanza, the tandem of Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek registered their first goals of …

St. Louis, Purcell Lead Lightning Past Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at the Tampa Bay Times Forum by the score of 5-1 in Michael Leighton’s first start of 2013. Martin St. Louis had four assists and Teddy Purcell had a goal with two helpers, while Philly’s goalie stopped 21 of 26 shots from the opposition in the loss. Sean Couturier had the Flyers’ lone goal, as Max Talbot had the only assist. Anders Lindback may have allowed a soft girl early, but he did a great job to limit Philly to one goal, as he stopped 24 of the Flyers’ 25 shots. In …
